UNIT 7: SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
(Sự hòa hợp chủ ngữ-động từ)
Trong một câu tiếng Anh, chủ ngữ và động từ phải phù hợp với nhau về ngôi và số (số ít hay số
nhiều)

1. ĐỘNG TỪ SỐ ÍT
Đại từ bất định: someone, somebody, something; anyone, anybody, anything; noone,
nobody, nothing; everyone, everybody, everything.
Everybody who wants to buy a ticket should be in this line.
Something is in my eye.
Either (có nghĩa 1 trong 2) và neither (không một ai trong hai) là số ít nếu chúng không
đi với or hoặc nor.
Ex: If either of you takes a vacation now, we will not be able to finish the work.
Each/every + N số ít and each/every + N số ít
Ex: Each boy and each girl has a book.
Noun + noun chỉ cùng một người.
Ex: My best friend and advisor, Tom, is coming tonight.
Khi V-ing dùng làm chủ ngữ
Knowing her has made him what he is.
To-V0 cũng có thể dùng làm chủ ngữ . Nhưng người ta thường dùng chủ ngữ giả it để
mở đầu câu.
To find the book is necessary for him = It is necessary for him to find the book.
Nhóm động vật hoặc gia súc: flock of birds/ sheep, school of fish, herd of cattle, pride of
lions, pack of dogs
The flock of birds is circling overhead.
A school of fish is being attacked by sharks.
Danh từ chỉ thời gian, tiền bạc, số đo, …
Twenty-five dollars is too much for the meal.
Fifty minutes isn’t enough time to finish this test
Two miles is too much to run in one day.
Danh từ không đếm được: furniture, advice, water, traffic, knowledge, homework,...
The furniture was more expensive than we thought.
Danh từ số ít nhưng có hình thức số nhiều: news, economics (kinh tế học), physics (vật
lý học), maths (toán học), politics (chính trị học), measles (bệnh sởi), mumps (bệnh quai
bị),...
Physics is more difficult than chemistry.
Tựa đề của một cuốn sách, báo, truyện
“Tom and Jerry” is well known all over the world.
Chủ ngữ là một mệnh đề
That you get very high grades in school is necessary.
3. ĐỘNG TỪ SỐ NHIỀU
Noun and noun chỉ 2 người (= they)
Mary and her manager are going to a party tonight.
The + Adj (chỉ một nhóm người trong xã hội)
The rich are not always happy.
Some, a lot of, many, several, a few,... + N (số nhiều)
Some books are very famous.
Danh từ số nhiều có hình thức số nhiều (vì chúng bao gồm 2 thực thể)

The pants are in the drawer.
These scissors are dull. (Chú ý chỉ có 1 cái kéo nhưng cũng dùng với these)

3. ĐỘNG TỪ SỐ ÍT HAY SỐ NHIỀU
Các trường hợp chủ ngữ đứng tách khỏi động từ:
• Cụm giới từ, mệnh đề quan hệ, dạng rút gọn mệnh đề thường nằm giữa chủ ngữ và động
từ. Chúng không ảnh hưởng đến việc chia động từ.
The study of languages is very interesting.
Serveral theories on this subject have been proposed.
The stamps that I’ve just taken are very precious.
Mary, along with her manager and some friends, is going to a party tonight.
Mr. Robbins, accompanied by her wife and children, is arriving tonight.

Nhưng nếu 2 đồng chủ ngữ nối với nhau bằng or thì động từ phải chia theo danh từ đứng
sau or.
The employees or their manager is going to answer the press interview.
