SAMPLE ESSAY 2.
Topic: Popular events like the football World Cup and other international sporting
occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic
emotions in a safe way
worldcup
Essay:
Every four years, the whole world stops to watch international sporting events such
as the Olympics and the Football World Cup in which athletes show their best
performance to make their country proud of them. These sporting occasions have
proved to be helpful in easing international tensions in difficult times when
powerful leaders were trying to control the world?s economy and other
governments were fighting over land.
The Olympic Games are one of the best examples which prove how sporting events
can bring nations together, at least temporarily. From ancient History, when Greeks
and Romans would interrupt battles to participate in the games, to the more recent
international disputes, when athletes from Palestine and Israel would forget their
differences, compete pacifically and even embrace each other after an event.
Moreover, these popular events have called the world?s attention to the terrible
consequences of wars; thus some leaders have tried to accept agreements to end
their dispute and live peacefully.
Similarly, international sporting events show benefits in some developing countries
which live in a daily internal civil war. For example, Brazil has a high rate of
unemployment, lack of education, hunger, crime, poverty and corruption which
leads to an immense embarrassment of being Brazilian and a low self-esteem.
However, when the Football World Cup starts, the Brazilian squad, which is
considered the best team in the world, provokes an amazing feeling of pride in their
country. Most people seem to forget all their problems and even the criminal
activity decreases. They paint roads with the national colors, use wear the Brazilian
team shirt and buy national flags. Moreover, the competition brings families and
neighbors together and even rival gangs watch the games and celebrate peacefully.
In conclusion, popular sporting events play an important role in decreasing
international tensions and liberating patriotic feelings as History has shown.
Topic: People who have original ideas are of much greater value to society than
those who are simple able to copy the ideas of others well.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Introduction - responds to task and adds a further consideration
I certainly agree that people who come up with new ideas; in other words who
'invent' or 'discover' things are terribly important to society as a whole. However, I
also think there is a role in society for good imitators.
Body
1st paragraph relates to the importance of those who invent consumer
products.
No one would deny that key individuals must be thanked for providing us with
certain facilities that we use every day. Where would we be, for example. without
basic items such as the washing machine, the television and, more recently, the
computer? These items are now used so regularly that we tend to take them for
granted.
2nd paragraph develops the idea that those who copy well have a role in
society. This idea is linked to the previous paragraph.
In fact, the society we live in today has become increasingly consumer-oriented,
and while it may be possible to constantly update and improve consumer goods,
not everyone where I live can afford the prices of these innovations. Furthermore,
not everyone lives in an area that has accessibility to the latest models on the
market. For this reason, there is a value to be placed on being able to provide good
copies of expensive items.
3rd paragraph highlights a more important aspect of discovery that can not be
replicated easily.
Having said that, certain innovations have a more serious impact on our lives than
consumer goods and cannot easily be replicated. Viral medicines like penicillin
and vaccines against dangerous diseases also exist because people made continual
efforts to develop them. Scientific ideas such as these enable us to live longer and
escape illness.
Conclusion is a summary of the main points in the answer.
Undoubtedly, scientists and engineers work extremely hard to make life better for
us. In some areas, their work adds comfort to our lives, and if people copy their
ideas, it helps a wider population to benefit from them. However, in other areas,
their contribution is unique, cannot be copied and without it, we would be unlikely
to survive or more forward.

Sample writing for this task:
I totally agree with the opinion in the title. There is increasing evidence that climate
changes are not just random but are being accelerated by industrial activity,
particularly in developed countries. Many nations are recording extreme weather
conditions, such as the wettest year on record, or the hottest summer on record. Sea
levels are rising and sea temperatures are increasing more rapidly than before.
The Kyoto Agreement in the 1990s tried to create international consensus to limit
industrial emissions of gases but unfortunately some nations are unwilling to
commit to real change. This is probably related to economic pressures from within
the country and the interests of multinational corporations. In industrialized nations
a good lifestyle means a high level of consumerism. This keeps factories operating
and people employed but it also creates enormous pollution and waste.
To solve these serious problems requires political action in a number of directions.
At the individual level, education programs in schools should be set up to reduce
wasteful behavior and to encourage respect for the planet. At the corporate level,
businesses need to develop responsible environmental
policies together with governments. They must be held legally accountable for their
actions.
One major difficulty is that environmental parties like the Greens have little
political power. Their policies are appropriate but they need support from the
general public in order to increase pressure on the main parties and large
corporations. The time for action is definitely now. Each year of delays and
ineffective policy will make it harder to restore the health of Planet Earth.
Writing task 2 series (Topic 1 - Discussion Essay) - How to start and finish this
task - Some useful languages
You should spend about 40 minutes and write at least 250 words on this task.
Write about the following topic:
We live today in an electronic information age . It is easier to be connected by
technology yet many people seem no closer to feeling happy in their lives .
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your
answer and include any relevant ideas from your own knowledge
or experience
Step by step to finish this task.
Step 1: Analyse the task
What type of essay it is? Two sides of an argument
What are the key words related to the topic? Electronic information, happy lives
What are the key words related to the task? Discuss
Which terms need explaining? happy/connected
Step 2: Generate ideas (Ask questions based on the key words)
+ What are the advantages of the electronic age?
- Email/Internet/Chat rooms (easy quick/cheap contact)
- Contact with family and friends (old/new)
- Technology can overcome isolation (eg: remote country like Finland)
+ Are we happy?
- Isolated at computer (only online friends?)
+ Evidence for lack of happiness?
- Rates of depression/suicide/divorce/stress
Step 3: Think it through (Put your ideas in order before you start to write)
+ Introduction:
- What is happiness? How it is related to being connected?
+ Paragraph topics:
- Advantages of technology (paragraph 1)
- Disadvantages of technology (paragraph 2)
Due to the requirement for discussing both these views, you have to write and
support for both sides with the same length of sentences. For example, the best
writing structure for writing "discussion essay" is 3/7/7/3 with 3 sentences for
both Introduction and Conclusion, and 7 sentences for each side of the issue.

To introduce or list advantages:
The main advantage of…..
The most important advantage of….
One advantage of..
An additional advantage of…
One major advantage of…
It is often suggested that …
It is often believed that...,
A further advantage of ….
For example: ADVANTANGES of USING CELL PHONES
The most important advantage of cell phones is that you can use them almost
everywhere without cables or electricity. By using mobile phones, you can
communicate with everyone whenever you want and wherever you
are. Beside this, if there is an urgent situation, such as an accident or a meeting
with someone, you certainly need a mobile phone. Furthermore, you can access
the internet by using a cell phone. Recently, the most common
way of communication in the world has been the SMS. Cell phones include this
system; in this way you can communicate with someone for cheaper than a normal
call.
To introduce or list disadvantages:
The main disadvantage of
The most important drawback of...,
One disadvantage of...,
One major disadvantage of…..
Another disadvantage of...,
An additional disadvantage of..
For instance: DISADVANTAGES of HAVING A CAR
There are certain disadvantages of having your own car.Firstly, you
have to maintain and repair your car regularly. Therefore, you need to spend a
considerable amount of money to keep the car in
good condition. Moreover, driving can sometimes be extremely stressful. For
example, being caught in a traffic jam is not only irritating but also timeconsuming. As a result, if you want to have a car, you
should consider all the disadvantages.
Sample writing for this task:
The electronic information age that we live in today, certainly makes
communicating very quick and easy. It is simple for many people to contact dozens
of others every day via computer or phone, but does this make them feel happier?
Happiness is difficult to define, but in addition to basic needs like food, shelter or
peace, it depends on such things as good health, a loving family and friends, and a
satisfying occupation - either job, study or pastime. Whether modern
communication has increased people’s feelings of happiness is, however,
debatable .
There are many advantages to being connected electronically. For the price of a
local Phone call we can stay in touch via email with family or friends around the
world. In this way isolation by distance or climate can be overcome. For example,
Finland with its long winter has one of the highest rates of internet use. Information
that would only be available to a small number of people without the use of
computers is now at our fingertips. Similarly thousands of people use chatrooms
and internet dating sites every
day.
On the other hand, it seems to be the case that depression and suicide rates are high
and the divorce rate is increasing. Employees complain of longer working hours
and increased stress levels. There is concern that people are in fact becoming more
isolated, only communicating on-line. On this evidence they seem unhappier today.
Happiness is hard to measure, as it is subjective and depends on the particular
situation. Perhaps there is more awareness of current problems because so much
information is available through technology and the media. Even so, it would seem
that the quality of our relationships and therefore our level of happiness is unrelated
to modern technology, which is, after all, only a tool.

Some people think the main purpose of education is to make individuals useful to
society while others say education helps them to achieve personal ambitions.
Discuss both views and give your opinion. ( ĐÊ NÀY THI TỪ 2 NĂM TRƯỚCLẶP ĐỀ)

Former idea
- To get along with others for the common goal
- To make meaningful contributions to social development
- To direct them towards moral behavior
Latter idea
- To pursue their ambitious dream and outperform themselves
- To assert their identity in the society
- To make them feel useful to society
Education is part of our life. Some people think that the main objective of
education is to make individuals try their best to realize their desires while others
claim that it should focus on training citizens to become useful ones. I partly agree
the former ideas for the following reasons.
On one hand, there are several reasons in support of the latter idea. People live in a
society in which they are supposed to interact with others. Hence, if they prioritize
their goals over others all the time, the common goal will never be fulfilled. In fact,
these individuals grow more selfish and aggressive to the society they are living in.
For instance, their personal dream is to create the most intelligent robots to replace
humans in many tasks and is strongly encouraged by teachers. However, have they
ever thought about the idea of robotizing all the society and the prospect of
thousands of people becoming unemployed one day? In addition, morality is
another concern in the purpose of education. By over-emphasizing the role of
spurring individuals to make their ambitions come true by all means, some
individuals cross the line of ethics as well. Let’s take an example of a student who
really wants to achieve a high score at any cost, and for that, he is willing to cheat
in the exam and claims himself to be outstanding. Or another instance is a person
dreaming of becoming a politician and bribing into others to have such a position.
In these situations, personal dreams or desires infringe on so-called community
benefit. That is not the sole aim of a true education.
On the other hand, no sooner do educators only concentrate on the idea of turning
individuals into useful citizens than the latter’s personal dreams can be
foreshadowed. Sometimes, in an effort to fulfill personal goals, the entire society
greatly benefits from it. Scientists who are devoted to their career of coming up
with great inventions are telling examples. Despite not getting along with many
people there, they actually mark the history with their meaningful contributions.
Furthermore, the emphasis on the implementation of personal desires gives people
the feeling of self-satisfaction and asserts their identity in a large community.
Psychologically speaking, everybody longs for being seen unique and important in
the society. Thus, they want that before they pass away, they at least make
something different that goes into history, and that is when they find their life truly
at peace. Singers who achieve the zenith of success find themselves admired by
others, feel extremely happy and even are motivated to give birth to more and more
meaningful songs. Steve Jobs, in an attempt to realize his goal of creating
something revolutionary, stays hungry, foolish and actually produces a series of
masterpieces for the world like I-phone, I-pod. His dreams, actually really personal
and second-to-none, lead human beings towards another stage of civilization.
In brief, I believe that education is to fulfill a dual task, one of which is to guide
people to live a useful life and another is to achieve personal ambitions
1. Fulfill: thực hiện
2. Civilization: văn minh
3. Robotize: ro bot hóa
4. Go into history: đi vào lịch sử
5. Realize: thực hiện, thực thi
6. Dual: là hai, lưỡng
7. Over- emphasize: nhấn mạnh
8. Objective: mục tiêu
