The North, South, and West followed distinct economic paths between 1800 and 1860.
Everywhere, agriculture remained the foundation of the American economy. Nevertheless,
the North increasingly invested its resources in industry, commerce, and finance; the South
in plantations and subsistence farms; and the West in commercialized family farms,
agricultural processing, and implement manufacturing. The tendency toward regional
specialization made the various sections of the country at once less alike and more
interdependent. All looked to transportation to link the various sections' economic
activities.
The revolution in transportation and communications was probably the single overriding
cause of these changes. Heavy investment in canals and railroads made the North the center
of American commerce; its growing seaboard cities distributed western produce and New
England textiles. New York financial and commercial houses linked the southern cottonexporting economy to the North and Europe. The South, with most of its capital invested in
slave labor, built fewer canals, railroads, and factories and remained mostly rural and
undeveloped.
