Sandra _________________________ (5) It’s a bit
wet, but it’s a great city. There’s a lot to do
there. You know, theatres, cinemas, clubs.

The story of Richard’s day shows the stress of
modern life, but Richard could do a lot to help
himself. He’s got an appointment at 2.50 with an
important new customer called Mr Patel. He has
worked hard and doesn’t want to lose the contract
with Mr Patel. In the morning Richard is getting
ready to go to see him. He is having a busy day so
far. He has been to two meetings and made several
telephone calls. He is in a hurry, because he does not

want to be late and he only has half an hour to get
there. Then, just as he is leaving the office, the
Managing Director calls asking him if he has read a
Sales report. She doesn’t know that Richard’s got an
important appointment, so she probably thinks that
it’s a convenient time to talk. Richard actually hasn’t
read the report and he explains to his boss that he
has been very busy. Richard doesn’t start the
journey until 2.30 pm. Then while he’s driving to his
appointment, he becomes more and more stressed.
There is a lot of traffic and the phone rings. He’s late
and Mr Patel is already waiting. He stops
concentrating on his driving. Then an accident
happens because Richard is worrying about Mr Patel.
He drives into the back of the driver in front. He
misses the appointment with Mr Patel. The next day
Mr Patel cancels the contract. Richard blames the
Managing Director because he’s late. But it isn’t the
Managing Director’s fault. Richard’s stress comes
from the fact that he doesn’t give himself enough
time for the journey.

Colin

_____ He becomes more and more stressed.

That must be a bit of a drag. Oh, right.
Really? That sounds very technical. Well, yes.
Yes, it’s all right. Yes, I bet. Yes, I suppose so.
Oh, really? Where? That sounds interesting.
What’s it like? Mmm that sounds lovely.
Sandra Where do you work, Colin? Around here?
Colin No. I work for an insurance company in
London.
Sandra Oh, yes. What do you do?
Colin I’m a computer programmer.
Sandra Really? That sounds very technical. Do you
enjoy it?
Colin

a lot to read.
Colin

_________________________ (8) Are you
living on the university campus?
Sandra No. I’m sharing a flat in the city. I really
like living in the city centre. Do you live in
London then?
Colin No, I live in Oxford. I find London a bit too
crowded these days. I’ve lived in Oxford for
about two years now, I suppose.
Sandra Do you actually live in Oxford itself?
Colin No, in a village about ten miles outside. I’ve
got a cottage down by the river.
Sandra _________________________ (9) So, do you
commute every day?
Colin Yes, I go by train.
