About forty years ago, I was taking along trip on foot over mountain heights quire unknown to 
tourists. All around was barren and colourless land. Nothing grew there but wild lavender. 
After five hours’ walking I had still not found water. All about me was the same dryness, the 
same coarse glasses. I thought I saw in the distance a small black silhouette. It was a 
shepherd. Thirty sheep were lying about him on the baking earth. He gave me  a drink and 
took me to his cottage on the plain.
I felt peace in the presence of this man. I asked if I might rest here for a day. He found it quite 
natural – or , to be more exact, he gave me the impression that nothing could surprise him. I 
didn’t actually need to rest, but I was interested and wished to know more about him.

Khoảng 40 năm về trước, tôi đã đi qua nhiều ngọn núi cao mà tôi không hề biết tên để du lịch. Tất 
cả xung quanh đó là những mảnh đất cằn cỗi và thiếu màu sắc. Không có gì ở đó phát triển ở đó 
ngoài trừ những cây oải hương dại.
Sau 5 giờ đi bộ tôi vẫn chưa tìm thấy nguồn nước nào. Tất cả những gì tôi thấy đều khô cạn giống 
nhau, giống như bãi cỏ khô. Tôi nghĩ rằng tôi đã nhìn thấy một bóng đen nhỏ từ đăng xa. Đó là 
một người chăn cừu. Ba mươi chú cừu đang nằm cạnh ông ấy trên mặt đất. Ông ta đã cho tôi uống 
nước và đưa tôi tới căn lều trên thảo nguyên của ông ta. 
Tôi đã cảm thấy sự yên bình trước hiện tại của người đàn ông này. Tôi đã hỏi, tôi có thể ở nghỉ 
ngơi ở đây một ngày không. Ông ta thấy khá là tự nhiên hoặc, chính xác hơn là, ông ta đã cho tôi 
cảm giác rằng không gì có thể khiến ông ngạc nhiên. Thực sự thì tôi không cần nghỉ ngơi, nhưng tôi

1. Giono wrote the story in 1953. In which year does the actual story begin?
          The story began in 1913.
2. The story takes place in Fance. Which part of France do you think it is? Why? What is the
countryside like?
           It might be the Alps. He talks about the moutains and the dry, colourless, barren 
countryside so it must be the South of France.
3. Why do you think the writter is intrerested in the shepherd? What do you think he likes
about his lifestyle?
          He must be interested to find out why someone lives in such a wild, barren place. I 
guess he likes the feeling of peace.

The shepherd puts a large sack of acorns onto the table. He inspects each
acorn and carefully chooses one the hundred perfect ones before going to
bed. The writer is curious. The next day when he goes out with the shepherd
into the ills, he discovers what the acorns are for.

Người chăn cừu đặt một bao tải lớn quả sồi lên bàn. Ông kiểm tra mỗi quả sồi
và cẩn thận chọn một trong hàng trăm quả hoàn hảo trước khi đi ngủ. Tác giả
là tò mò. Ngày hôm sau khi anh đi ra ngoài với những người chăn cừu trong
những ngọn đồi , anh phát hiện ra những gì các quả sồi được cho.

I noticed that he carried for a stick an iron rod as thick as my thumb and about a metre and a half long. He 
began thrusting his iron rod into the earth, making a hole in which he planted an acorn; the he refilled the 
hole. He was planting oak trees.
After the midday meal he resumed his planting. I suppose I must have been fairly insistent in my 
questioning, for he answered me. For three years he had been planting trees in this wilderness. He had 
planted one hundred thousand. Of the hundred thousand, twenty thousand had sprouted. Of the twenty 
thousand he still expected to lose half. There remained ten thousand had grow where nothing had grown 
before.
That was when I began to wonder about the age of this man. He was obviously over fifty. Fifth-five he told 

me. His name was Elzeard Bouffier. I told him that in thirty years his ten thousand oaks would be 
magnificent. He answered that if God granted him life, in another thirty years he would have planted so 
many more that these ten thousand would be like a drop of water in the ocean.
The next day we parted.

Tôi để ý thấy rằng ông ta mang một cây gậy sắt tròn dày như ngón cái của tôi và dài một mét rưỡi. Ông ta 
bắt đầu thọc mạnh thanh sắt xuống đất , đào một cái hố rồi đặt quả cây sồi vào rồi lấp cái hố lại. Ông ta 
đang trồng những cây sồi.
Sau bữa ăn trưa, ông ta bắt đầu lại với công việc trồng cây của mình. Tác giả sử tôi phải nhấn mạnh tính 
công bằng trong câu hỏi của mình, ông ấy đã trả lời tôi. Trong vòng ba năm trở lại đây ông ấy đã trồng cây 
trên mảnh đất hoang dã này. Ông ấy đã trồng được hơn 100,000 cây. Trong đó hơn 20,000 cây đã nảy 
mầm. Trong số 20,000 cây ông ấy vẫn mong đợi đã chết môt nửa. Một nửa còn lại 10,000 cây sồi đã phát 
triển ở những nơi mà chúng chưa từng phát triển trước đây.
Từ đó tôi đã bắt đầu tự hỏi về tuổi của người đàn ông này. Ông ấy rõ ràng hơn 50 tuổi. Ông ấy nói với tôi 
là 55 tuổi. Tên ông ấy là Elzeard Bouffier. Tôi nói với ông ấy rằng trong 30 năm, 10 ngàn cây sồi của ông ấy

4. How old do you think the writer was at the time of the story? A boy in his teens? In his
twenties? Middle-aged? Older? Why?
The writer is a boy in his teens at the time of the story. Because he wrote this story in 1913 
and he was born in 1895.

5. How old will Elzeard be in thirty years time? What year will it be?
He will be 85 years old. He is 55 now in the story,  so in thirty years time he’ll 85. It’s 1913 
now in the story, so in thirty years time it’ll be 1913.
6. What do you think Elzeard ‘s ambition is? What is his vision of the future?
Elzeard’s ambition is in another thirty years he would have plants so many more trees and 
these ten thousand would be like a drop of water in the ocean.

writer is a soldier and fights in
World War I. The war ends in
1918 and his thought turn
again to the tree-planter in the
mountain. He returns to look for
him.

I had seen too many men die during those five years not to imagine easily that Elzeard Bouffier was 
dead, especially since, at twenty, one regards men of fifty as old as  men with nothing left to do but 
die. He was not dead. As a matter of fact, he was extremely well. He had changed jobs. He had got 
rid of the sheep because they threatened his young trees. For, he told me, the war had disturbed 
him not at all. He had imperturbably continued to plant.
The oaks were then ten years old and taller than both of  us. It was an impressive spectacle. I was 
literally speechless, and as he did not talk, we spent the whole day walking in silence through his 
forest. It measured eleven kilometers in length and three kilometers at its greatest width. When you 
remembered that all this had come from the hands and the soul of this one man, you understood 
that men could be as effective as God in ways other than destruction.

7. Why did the writer think that Elzeard Bouffier might have died?
Because when he met Elzeard Bouffier he (the writter) was only 20, and at the age someone 
over 50 seems old and likely to die soon 
8. How had the war affected Elzeard?
The war hadn’t affected Elzeard at all. He had just continued to plant hiss trees.
9. Why is the writer speechless?
Because there was now a large forest. He amazed at the size of the forest and the trees.
10. What thoughts about human behavior does he have in the last sentence?
He thinks that it is amazing that just one man could do all this. Man could creat like God and 
not be destructive.

The writer returns for a final visit in
1945 after World War II. Elzeard is still
alive. The writer is amazed at what he
sees. Not only is there the forest, but
many villages have been rebuilt, and
by 1953 more than ten thousand
people in the area owe their
happiness to Elzeard Bouffier.

Nhà văn trở lại trong một chuyến thăm cuối cùng trong
năm 1945 sau Thế chiến II. Elzeard vẫn còn sống. Nhà
văn ngạc nhiên trước những gì ông nhìn thấy. Không
chỉ có rừng, nhiều làng nghề đã được xây dựng lại, và

The bus put me down in Vergons. In 1913 this village of ten or twelve houses had three 
inhabitants. All about them nettles were feeding upon the remains of abandoned houses. Now 
everything had changed. Even the air. Instead of the harsh dry winds, a gentle breeze was blowing, 
laden with scents. A sound like water came from the mountains: it was the wind in the forest. 
Most amazing of all, I heard the  actual sound of water falling into a pool. I saw a fountain had 
been built. Ruins had been cleared away, and five houses restored. Now there were twenty-eight 
inhabitants, four of them young married couples. It was now a village where one would like to live.
When I think that one man was able to cause this land of Canaan to grow from wasteland, I am 
convinced that in spite of everything, humanity is good.
Elzeard Bouffier died peacefully in his sleep in 1947.

11. What has happened in the writer’s life that could have made him pessimistic? Is he in fact
pessimistic about the world? Give a reason for your answer.
There have been two world wars. He’s not pessimistic because when he sees the results of Elzeard 
Bouffier’s work, not just forests but villages, he is convinced that despite such things as wars, 
humanity is still good – although there is evil in the world, there is also good.
12. How is it that so many people owe their happiness to one man? What are the results of his
tree-planting?
Because of the trees, the land is not barren any more and people have returned to the villages. They 
can farm the land again and bring up their families in beautiful surroundings.
13. How old is Elzeard when he dies? Why is it so important that he had a long life?
We learnt earlier that in 1943 he was 85. He dies in 1947. Therefore he is 89 when he dies. It is 
important that he had a long life because he was able to plant so many trees.
