Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the following questions.
An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such
quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible
definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the
fourteenth century air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled- a far cry from the extensive
list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspect of various
chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered
an air pollutant under certain conditions.
Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found
in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they
became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to
move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from
human activities.
However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human output may
be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased
concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater
than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration

need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of
an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide
has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (p.p.m), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon
monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 p.p.m and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 p.p.m.
Question 4. The word "detectable" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.

Question 6. The word "localized" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A. specified B. surrounded C. circled D. encircled
Question 7. According to the passage, human-generated air pollution in localized regions __________.
A. can be dwarfed by nature's output of pollutants B. can overwhelm the natural system that removes pollutants
C. will damage areas outside of the localized regions D. will react harmfully with natural pollutants
Question 8. Which of the following is best supported by the passage?
A. One of the most important steps in preserving natural lands is to better enforce air pollution laws.
B. Human activities have been effective in reducing air pollution.
C. Scientists should be consulted in order to establish uniform limits for all air pollutants
D. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly review their air pollution laws.
Question 9. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. How much harm air pollutants can cause. B. The economic impact of air pollutant.
C. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere. D. What constitutes an air pollutant.
Question 10. For which of the following reasons can natural pollutants play an important role in controlling air
pollution? A. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants. B. They function as part of a purification process.
C. They are less harmful to living beings than other pollutants. D. They have existed since the Earth developed.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the following questions.
The advent of the Internet may be one of the most important technological developments in recent years. Never
before have so many people had access to so many different sources of information. For all of the Internet's advantages,

however, people are currently becoming aware of some of its drawbacks and are looking for creative solutions. Among
the current problems, which include a general lack of reliability and numerous security concerns, the most crucial is
speed.
First of all, the Internet has grown very quickly. In 1990, only a few academics had ever heard of the Internet. In
1996, over 50 million people used it. Every year, the number of people with access to the Internet doubles. The rapid
growth has been a problem. The computer systems which run the Internet have not been able to keep up with the
demand. Also, sometimes, a request for information must pass through many routing computers before the information
can be obtained. A request for information made in Paris might have to go through computers in New York, Los Angeles
and Tokyo in order to obtain the required information. Consequently, the service is often slow and unpredictable.
Service also tends to be worse when the Internet is busiest - during the business day of the Western Hemisphere - which
is also when companies need its service the most.
Some people are trying to harness the power of networked computers in such a way as to avoid this problem. In
1995, a group of American universities banded together to form what has come to be known as Internet II. Internet II is
a smaller, more specialized system intended for academic use. Since it is more specialized, fewer users are allowed
access. Consequently, the time required to receive information has decreased.
Businesses are beginning to explore a possible analogue to the Internet II. Many businesses are creating their own
"Intranets". These are systems that can only be used by the members of the same company. In theory, fewer users
should translate into a faster system. Intranets are very useful for large national and international companies whose
branches need to share information. Another benefit of an Intranet is an increased amount of security. Since only
company employees have access to the information on the Intranet, their information is protected from competitors.
While there is little doubt that the Internet will eventually be a fast and reliable service, industry and the academic
community have taken their own steps toward making more practical global networks.
Question 69. The word "their" refers to __________.
