MOTHER’S DAY
The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day. It is a public holiday in both Britain
and America. On that day children send Mother's Day cards to their mothers. They give
their mothers flowers or sweets as presents. Fathers and children do the cooking so that
mothers can have a rest.
In the USA, Mother's Day started in 1860s. There was a small town called Prunty
town in the middle of the USA. People in the town fought against each other during a
war. After the war they hated each other. Mrs. Ann Reeves Janis wanted the people to
make friends with each other again. So she started “Mother's Friendship Day”. On that
day she visited all the other mothers in the town and said: "Let us be friends with each
other again".

Her idea succeeded. The same thing happened in other parts of the country. After
she died, her daughter carried on her idea. In 1908 “Mother's Friendship Day” became
Mother's Day.

III. Read the following passage and then choose the best answer by circling its
corresponding letter A, B, C or D. (1,0 point)
The thing I like most about living on a farm when I was small was the change of seasons.
Spring, summer, autumn and winter - I could see them all come and go and each one was
completely different. If I hadn't been born and raised in the country, I would have never been able
to tell the difference - now in the city, you can buy summer flowers in winter and eat the same
vegetables all the year round. Whereas, in the country, I could only eat things at certain times of
the year - for example strawberries in June and turnips in winter. I lived my childhood with the
seasons.

Also we made most of our food and would never eat frozen or tinned food. Everything was
fresh - so it must be better than the type of food I am taking now in the city. City people may
think people in the country miss a lot of good things about modern life, but in my opinion they
miss a lot more than  - they miss real life.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Comparison between life on a farm and that in the city.
B. Food in the country in comparison to that in the city.
C. Seasons in the country.
D. The author's childhood.
2. According to the author, the seasons on the farm were …………….
A. similar B. very different from one another
C. beautiful D. different from those in the city
3. What can be inferred from the passage about the experience of seasons in a year for the city
people?
A. Seasons are similar.
B. It may be difficult for them to tell seasonal difference.
C. They see different seasons come and go.
D. Food is similar in all four seasons.
4. The word "" in line 10 refers to …………….
A. city people B. four seasons
C. good things about modern life D. people in the country
5. According to the passage, all the followings are true EXCEPT that …………….
A. there are four seasons in the country where the author used to live.
B. the author was born and raised on a farm.
C. people in the country eat the same type of food all the year round.

II/ Read the following passage and choose the correct answer.

Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more
people in the world. Factories  more and more products and need more and more
water. We live in a world of water. But almost all of it - about 97% - is in the oceans. This
water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing. Only about 3% of
the world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man because it is
locked in glaciers and icecaps.
There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of
the water we use finds its way to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then
falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and reused over again. It is never used up.
Although the world has plenty of fresh water, some regions have a water shortage. Rain
does not fall evenly over the earth. Some regions are always too dry, and others too wet.
A region that usually gets enough rain may suddenly have a serious dry spell and another
region may be flooded with too much rain.

D. The percentage of fresh water is very small.
4. It is implied in the second paragraph that
A. The amount of water on earth is always the same.
B. Water will be exhausted.

C. Water can be used once only.
D. Most of the water we use is salty water from the oceans.

A. no region in the world suffers from a lack of fresh water.
