answer to each of the questions, from 51 to 60.
Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as "silent", the film has never
been, in the full sense of the word, silent. From the very beginning, music was regarded as an indispensable
accompaniment; when the Lumiere films were shown at the first public film exhibition in the United States
in February 1896, they were accompanied by piano improvisations on popular tunes. At first, the music
played bore no special relationship to the films; an accompaniment of any kind was sufficient. Within a very
short time, however, the incongruity of playing lively music to a solemn film became apparent, and film
pianists began to take some care in matching their pieces to the mood of the film.
As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and perhaps a cellist, would be added
to the pianist in certain cases, and in the larger movie theaters small orchestras were formed. For a number
of years the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in the hands of the conductor or leader
of the orchestra, and very often the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or taste
so much as the ownership of a large personal library of musical pieces. Since the conductor seldom saw the
films until the night before they were to be shown (if, indeed, the conductor was lucky enough to see 0*EL
then), the musical arrangement was normally improvised in the greatest hurry.
To help meet this difficulty, film distributing companies started the practice of publishing
suggestions for musical accompaniments. In 1909, for example, the Edison Company began issuing with
their films such indications of mood as "pleasant', "sad", "lively". The suggestions became more explicit,
and so emerged the musical cue sheet containing indications of mood, the titles of suitable pieces of music,
and precise directions to show where one piece led into the next.
Certain films had music especially M:LN:7E; for them. The most famous of these early special
7M:OE7 was that composed and arranged for D. W. Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, which was released in

However objective we believe ourselves to be, most of us do not judge a product solely on its merits,
considering quality, value and style before making a decision. (61)________, we are easily influenced by
the people around us.
There is nothing (62)___________ with this. It is probably a smarter way to make decisions than
(63)________ on only our own opinions. But it does make life hard for companies. They have long
understood that groups of friends and relatives tend to buy the same products, but understanding the reasons
has been tricky. It is because they are so similar with (64)_______ to how much money they make and what
television ads they watch that they independently (65)________ at the same decision? Or do they copy one
another, perhaps (66)______ envy or perhaps because they have shared information about the products?
Research in Finland recently found overwhelming evidence that neighbours have a big influence on
buying decisions. When one of a person’s ten nearest neighbours bought a car, the chances that that person
would buy a car of the same brand during the next week and a half (67)__________ by 86 per cent. The
researchers argued that it was not just a (68)_________ of envy. Used cars seemed to attract neighbours
even more than new cars. This suggested that people were not trying to (69)_______ up with their
neighbours, they were keen to learn from them. Since used cars are less reliable, a recommendation of one
can (70)________influence a buying decision.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions, from 71 to 80.
Glass is a remarkable substance made from the simplest raw materials. It can be colored or colorless,
monochrome or polychrome, transparent, translucent, or opaque. It is lightweight impermeable to liquids,
readily cleaned and reused, ;DO<8QE yet fragile, and often very beautiful Glass can be decorated in multiple
ways and its optical properties are exceptional. In all its myriad forms - as table ware, containers, in
architecture and design - glass represents a major achievement in the history of technological developments.
Since the Bronze Age about 3,000 B.C., glass has been used for making various kinds of objects. It
was first made from a mixture of silica, line and an alkali such as soda or potash, and these remained the
basic ingredients of glass until the development of lead glass in the seventeenth century. When heated, the
mixture becomes soft and malleable and can be formed by various techniques into a vast array of shapes and
sizes. The homogeneous mass thus formed by melting then cools to create glass, but in contrast to most
materials formed in this way (metals, for instance), glass lacks the crystalline structure normally associated
with solids, and instead retains the random molecular structure of a liquid. In effect, as molten glass cools, it
progressively stiffens until rigid, but does so without setting up a network of interlocking crystals
MD70:L<O,QRassociated with that process. This is why glass shatters so easily when dealt a blow. Why glass
deteriorates over time, especially when ESN:7E; to moisture, and why glassware must be slowly reheated
and uniformly cooled after manufacture to release internal stresses ,$;DME; by uneven cooling.
Another unusual feature of glass is the manner in which its viscosity changes as ,0turns from a cold
substance into a hot, ductile liquid. Unlike metals that flow or "freeze" at specific temperatures glass
5
progressively softens as the temperature rises, going through varying stages of malleability until it flows like
a thick syrup. Each stage of malleability allows the glass to be manipulated into various forms, by different
techniques, and if suddenly cooled the object retains the shape achieved at that point. Glass is thus amenable
to a greater number of heat-forming techniques than most other materials.

Passage 1
Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and
zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was
hired by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but
sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which provided
a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine
biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed
sources. She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field. However,
she always realized the limitations of her non-technical readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silence Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how
much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the
food supply of animals, kill birds, and contaminate human food. At that time, spokesmen for the chemical
industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her findings were
flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a 1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.

Passage 2
After 0Z:;EM<;E7 of growing student enrollments and economic NO:7NEO,0R, business schools in the
United States have started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School has shown a substantial increase
in enrollment in recent years. Both Princeton and Stanford have seen decreases in their enrollments. Since
1990, the number of people receiving Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degrees, has dropped about
3 percent to 75,000, and the 0OE$;:[ lower enrollment rates is expected to continue.
There are two factors causing this decrease in students 7EE\,$] an MBA degree. The first one is that
many graduates of four-year colleges are finding that an MBA degree does not guarantee a plush job on
Wall Street, or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of the entry-level management
jobs are going to students graduating with Master of Arts degrees in English and the humanities as well as
those holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question, "Is an MBA degree really what I need to be
best prepared for getting a good job?" The second major factor has been the MD00,$] of American payrolls
and the lower number of entry-level jobs being offered. Business needs are changing, and MBA schools are

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence. He
was the son of a wealthy Florentine public official and a peasant woman. In the mid-1460s, the family
settled in Florence, where Leonardo was given the best education that Florence could offer. He rapidly
advanced socially and intellectually. He was handsome, persuasive in conversation, and a fine musician and
improviser. About in 1466 he <NNOE$0,ME; as a studio boy to Andrea Del Verrocchio. In Verrocchio’s
workshop, Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures
to the creation of large sculptural projects. In 1472, he was entered in the painter’s guild of Florence, and in
15
1476, he was still mentioned as Verrocchio’s assistant. In Verrocchio’s Baptism of Christ, the kneeling
angel at the left of the painting is by Leonardo.
In 1478, Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the
chapel of the Palazzo Vecchino, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His first large painting, The
Adoration of the Magi, left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto,
Florence. Other works ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois Madonna, the portrait Ginerva de’
Benci, and the unfinished Saint Jerome.
In 1482, Leonardos career moved into high gear when he entered the service of the duke of Milan,
Ludovico Sforza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in which he stated that *E could build
portable bridges; that he knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons; that he
could build ships as well as armored vehicles, M<0<NDQ07, and other war machines; and that he could execute
sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay. He served as a principal engineer in the duke’s numerous military
enterprises and was so active also as an architect. In addition, he assisted the Italian mathematician Luca
Pacioli in the celebrated work Divina Proportione.
Evidence indicates that Leonardo had apprentices and pupils in Milan, for whom he probably wrote
the various texts later compiled as Treatise on Painting. The most important of his own paintings during the
early Milan period was The Virgin of the Rocks, two versions of which exist; he worked on the compositions
for a long time, as was his custom, seemingly unwilling to finish what he had begun.
From 1495 to 1496, Leonardo labored on his masterpiece, The Last Super, a mural in the refectory
of the Monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, Milan. Unfortunately, his experimental use of oil on dry
plaster was technically unsound, and by 1500 its deterioration had begun. Since 1726 attempts have been
made, unsuccessfully, to restore it; a M:$MEO0E; restoration and conservation program, making use of the
latest technology, was begun in 1977 and is reversing some of the damage. Although much of the original
surface is gone, the majesty of the composition and the penetrating characterization of the figures give a
fleeting vision of its vanished splendor.
During his long stay in Milan, Leonardo also produced other paintings and drawings, most of which
have been lost, theater designs, architectural drawings, and models for the dome of Milan Cathedral. His
largest commission was for a colossal bronze monument to Francesco Sforza, father of Ludovico, in the
courtyard of Castello Sforzesco. In December 1499, however, the Sforza family was driven from Milan by
French forces; Leonardo left the statue unfinished and he returned to Florence in 1500.

answer to each of the following questions.
It is said that George Washington was one of the first to realize how important the building of canals
would be to the nation’s development. In fact, before he became the President, he headed the first company
in the United States to build a canal, which was to connect the Ohio and Potomac rivers. It was never
completed, but it showed the nation the [E<7,8,Q,0R of canals. As the country expanded westward, settlers in
western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio needed a means to ship goods. Canals linking natural
waterways seemed to supply an effective method.
In 1791, engineers commissioned by the state of New York investigated the possibility of a canal
between Albany on the Hudson River and Buffalo on Lake Eric to link the Great Lakes area with the
Atlantic seacoast. It would avoid the mountains that served as a barrier to canals from the Delaware and
Potomac rivers.
The first attempt to dig the canal, to be called the Eric Canal, was made by private companies but
only a comparatively small portion was built before the project was halted for lack of funds. The cost of the
prospect was an estimated $5 million, an enormous amount for those days. There was some :$T<]<,$T:[[T

The canal rapidly lived up to its sponsors’ faith, quickly paying for itself through 0:QQ7. It was far
more economical than any other form of transportation at the time. It permitted trade between the Great
Lake region and the East coast, robbing the Mississippi River of much of its traffic. It allowed New York to
supplant Boston, Philadelphia, and other eastern cities as the chief center of both domestic and foreign

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
In 1472, he was entered in the painter’s guild of Florence, and in
1476, he was still mentioned as Verrocchio’s assistant.
