The sky was clear. Bobcat was
skiing down the mountain. Then
there was a surprising thud!
3
“Oh, the snow is slipping down
the mountain! I must hurry home
to tell my mother,” said Bobcat.
Off went Bobcat at top speed.
4
On his way down, Bobcat met
Ostrich. Ostrich was skiing this
way and that.
“There’s no time for that!”
called Bobcat. “The snow is
slipping down the mountain!
We must hurry home!”
5
“Oh, dear!” said Ostrich. “We
should hurry home, but first we
must tell Elk.”
Off they went at top speed.
They met Elk as he was doing a
big leap off a snow bank. “Look
at me!” Elk yelled.
6
“There’s no time for that!”
called Ostrich. “The snow is
slipping down the mountain!
We must hurry home!”
Off they went at top speed.
7
They were near the door of
Elk’s house when the Cubs came
running.
“The snow isn’t slipping,” the
Cubs bragged. “It was us!”
A snowball went thud. It hit
Bobcat.
8
“You shouldn’t do that!” Bobcat
told them with a grin. He tossed a
snowball back at the Cubs.
Then they all did it. Thud, thud!
It was as much fun as skiing!
Think Critically
1. Why did Bobcat tell the other animals that snow
was slipping down the mountain?
2. Who did Bobcat meet as he went down the
mountain?
3. What happened at the end of the story?
4. How do you know that Bobcat wasn’t too upset with
the Cubs?
5. Would you like to play in snow? Why or why not?
Social Studies
Write and Draw Write three sentences about things people
need to live in places where it snows. Draw a picture to go with
your sentences.
School-Home Connection Tell a family member
about what happened to Bobcat. Then talk about why
you need to be careful when you play jokes on people.
