Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 31 to 40
The advent of the Internet may be one of the most important technological developments in recent years.
Never before have so many people had access to so many different sources of information. For all of the
Internet’s advantages, however, people are currently becoming aware of some of its drawbacks and are
looking for creative solutions. Among the current problems, which include a general lack of reliability and
numerous security concerns, the most crucial is speed.
First of all, the Internet has grown very quickly. In 1990, only a few academics had ever heard of the
Internet. In 1996, over 50 million people used it. Every year, the number of people with access to the Internet
doubles. The rapid growth has been a problem. The computer systems which run the Internet have not been
able to keep up with the demand. Also, sometimes a request for information must pass through many routing
computers before the information can be obtained. A request for information made in Paris might have to go
through computers in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in order to obtain the required information.

Consequently, service is often slow and unpredictable. Service also tends to be worse when the Internet is
busiest – during the business day of the Western Hemisphere- which is also when companies need its service
the most.
Some people are trying to harness the power of networked computers in such a way to avoid this
problem. In 1995, a group of American universities banded together to form what has come to be known as
Internet II. Internet II is a smaller, more specialized, fewer users are allowed access. Consequently, the time
required to receive information has decreased.
Businesses are beginning to explore a possible analogue to the Internet II. Many businesses are
creating their own” Intranets”. These are systems that can only be used by the members of the same company.
In theory, fewer users should translate into a faster system. Intranets are very useful for large national and
international companies whose branches need to share information. Another benefit of an Intranet is an
increased amount of security. Since only company employees have access to the information on the Intranet,
their information is protected from competitors. While there is little doubt that the Internet will eventually be
a fast , reliable service, industry and the academic community have taken their own steps toward making
more practical global networks.

answer to each of the questions from 51 to 60
It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it. We often value the love and worth
of a friend when he has been taken from us by death more than when he was with us in the flesh ; it is only
when we have left school or college that we understand the greatness of our opportunity of education, which
has gone forever; and it is the sick and the ailing who realize the value of good health. When we are young
and strong, we cannot imagine what it is to be weak and ailing. We are so used to vigorous health that we
take it for granted. The organs of our body work so smoothly that we scarcely know we have lungs and
livers, hearts and stomachs. But when any of these gets upset and give us pain and sickness, we learn by bitter
experience what an unspeakable it is to be well.
Loss of health makes us miserable and it is a burden to ourselves and our friends. It cripples our
efforts so that we cannot accomplish many of the good and great things we might have done. It spoils our life.
What must we do to keep our health? We must be moderate in eating and drinking , and wise in the choice of
plain, wholesome, simple food. Gluttony has killed thousands and strong drink has skilled tens of thousands.
We must, when young, get plenty of sleep, which is nature’s sweet restorer, and not try to burn the candle

at both ends. We must live as much as possible in the open air and keep our rooms well ventilated. We must
get sufficient and regular physical exercise, and keep our bodies clean. We must avoid bad habits and secret
sins as we avoid the devil and keep our thoughts clean and our bodies pure. Our ideal must be the sound mind
in the sound body.

D. assume that our health will be weakened by time, so we should pay much attention to it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50
The advent of the Internet may be one of the most important technological developments in recent years.

Question 41: The word “ access” in line 7 is closest in meaning to “________”
A. aspiration B. admittance C. sincerity D. variation
Question 42: According to the passage, which of the following is true of the Internet?
A. It has created a sense of financial security.
B. It is too expensive to access.
C. It tends to be unreliable.
D. It has become increasingly less popular.
Question 43: According to the author, what is one reason why the Internet is sometimes slow?

A. Phone lines are often too busy with phone calls and fax transmissions to handle Internet traffic.
B. Often a request must travel through many computers before it reaches its final destination
C. Most people don’t have computers that are fast enough to take advantage of the Internet.
D. Scientists take up so much time on the Internet, thus slowing it down for everyone else.
Question 44: The word “ obtain” in line 11 is closest in meaning to “______”
A. understand B. purchased C. acquired D. distributed
Question 45: The word” harness” in line 15 is closest in meaning to “ _______”

Question 46: According to the passage, what benefits does Internet II have over the Internet?
A. There is no government intervention regulating Internet II.
B. Small businesses pay higher premiums to access the Internet.
C. Internet II has fewer users and therefore is faster to access.
D. Internet II contains more information than the Internet.
Question 47: The word “ analogue” in line 19 most nearly means “________”
A. similarity B. alternative C. use D. solution
Question 48: The word “their” in line 24 refers to “______”

Question 49: With which of the following conclusions would the author probably agree?

B. The technology used by internet creators is too complex for computer owners to understand.
C. An Internet system with fewer users would be quicker.
D. Companies who develop their own intranets are limiting their information data base.
Question 50:All of the following are advantages of business “ Intranets” mentioned in the passage
EXCEPT _______
A. they provide a higher level of security.

D. They move data faster.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct

answer to each of the questions from 51 to 60
It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it.
Question 51: The phrase “ in the flesh” used in line 2 can be best replaced by______
A. in mental form B. in physical bodily form
C. in material form D. in spiritual form
Question 52: As used in line 6, the phrase “ take it for granted” probably means________
A. expect that our vigorous health will always exist and so not pay much attention to it.
B. think that our health will decline day after day.
C. suppose that we will never stay in good health again.
D. assume that our health will be weakened by time, so we should pay much attention to it.
Question 53: In the line 12, the word “ gluttony” may probably means _________

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 21 to 30
It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it.
