One thing before another
Before + clause: most typical
Ex: Before I went to work I fed the cat.
Before + V-ing form: formal/written style
Ex: Before going to work I wrote some letters
prior to + V-ing: formal/written style
Ex: I had to witten to her prior to meeting the comittee.
Previously: fairly formal, more imformal would be before that, I
Ex: It was nice to be in Venice. Previously I'd only been to Rome.
earlier on: before then, fairly informal
Ex: I was in the office from 2: 30. i was out earlier on.
As I mentioned earlier
Formerly: fairly formal, typicallywritten, used when something has
changed its name, state, etc
Ex: The city is now called Thatcherville. Formerly it was
Grabtown.
things happening at the same time
while + clause or while + V-ing : more formal
Ex: while i waited, I read the newspaper or While waiting, I read
the newspaper.
As + clause but not using as + V-ing: as discribes the background
when somehting happens in the foreground.
Ex: As I was riding to shool, I saw an accident.
just as: precise moment( clear, accurate, exact time)
Ex: I saw her just as she was turning the corner.
at the very time, the very moment: these two are stronger and
more precise than as and just as.
Ex: She was entering at the very time/ the very moment i was
