People need water to drink and to cook. They need water to keep
themselves clean. They need water to produce food and to raise
livestock. Hospitals consume huge amounts of water. There can
be no life without water and it is intolerable for people not to have
access to water. There are many places where people have no
clean water and no sanitation. They drink dirty water, so they pick
up water-borne diseases. They do not have enough water to
wash, so they get hygiene-related diseases. Epidemics break out
and many people die.
Droughts are also a cause 6f lacking water. Droughts are an
insidious killer which does not destroy human life seriously in the
same way as an earthquake, a hurricane or a volcanic eruption.
However worldwide, droughts account for half of all deaths due to
natural disaster.
That is why the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
is calling on governments to do more to ensure that people need
to have access to safe water and decent sanitation. The ICRC's
response is based purely on the needs of the people affected. To
meet those needs, they have to establish good working
relationships with all concerned. To ensure people have safe
access to water, they have made their efforts to maintain water
and sanitation services.
