I.

Supporting sentences

* What is a supporting sentence?
-

The supporting sentences of a paragraph develop the main idea you presented in
the topic sentence. When writing supporting sentences you should be giving
examples, reasons, or descriptions to support your topic sentence.
Supporting sentences should focus on the following:
They should provide the main supporting points for the paragraph's main idea
(topic sentence)

-

There are usually 2 - 4 supporting sentences in a paragraph.

-

They should be arranged in a logical order.

-

They should NOT begin a new topic or introduce a new idea.

* Types of supporting sentences
There are 3 types of supporting sentences, including:
 Supporting definition: Give the definition or meaning of the controlling idea
 Supporting explanation: Add more detailed information and explain to the
reader to understand the controlling idea more profoundly
 Supporting example: Give examples for the reader to help them get the
information, imagine it and be able to practice it
-

For example, in this paragraph:
Nowadays, Young people are more immersed in social media than in real life.

Immersion in social media than in real life means that young people take care of their
virtual life more than in real life. In the past, people usually went outside and met their
friends. Today’s youth rely on their computers and cell phones to keep in touch with
their friends. They usually see what their friends are up to on Facebook or Instagram
and rarely go outside and discover different aspects of life. As a result, young people
can find themselves unprepared in daily life such as they can have difficulty in
communication like making a conversation with a stranger or making a speech in front
of a crowd. For example, I am an extrovert person on the social network. I post
everything and do on my Facebook and express my feeling to my online friends. But in

real life, people often say I’m an introverted person because I’m pretty quiet. I really
don’t know what to say. As a result, people like me more in virtual life and often feel

Topic sentence:
Nowadays, Young people are more immersed in social media than in real life
Supporting Definition:
Immersion in social media than in real life means that young people take care of their
virtual life more than in real life.
Supporting Explanation:
In the past, people usually went outside and met their friends. Today’s youth rely on

* Why are supporting sentences important?
Because it gives the information that supports the main idea or
claim. Supporting sentences give the reader details to understand the main idea, or
evidence to show why a claim is true or correct. They help the reader to get the
