Do you ever get bored with the same old sports? If you're tired of tennis, fed up with football or bored

Imagine it: no more deleting an inbox full of 'unbeatable offers'. Email could soon be a thing of the
past if Thierry Breton, CEO of the information technology services company Atos, is accurate in his
predictions. Breton has told his staff to stop sending each other emails, complaining that they waste time
and are outmoded. He also predicted that companies would have a problem in the future because of all
this useless information.
Internal email will be phased out over 18 months at Atos. The 75,000 staff will instead use instant
messaging and chat-style services inspired by social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Atos

staff used to spend between 5 and 20 hours a day dealing with email, but Breton's replacements have cut
this by up to 20%, the firm claims. His strategy has been already adopted by teenagers, who are
increasingly rejecting email. Email use is down 31% among the 12-17 age group, with a further 21%
slump among those aged 18-24. Mobile Instant Messaging (IM) services such as Blackberry Messenger
and Yahoo! Messenger were designed to allow low-cost, real-time communication. ‘High school kids
don’t use email,’ the 27-year-old technology pioneer said. ‘They want things like SMS and IM to message
each other.' However, when they start working, those teens are likely to find that emails, and all that spam,
haven't gone away.

The proportion of companies sending more than 50,000 emails each month is increasing and is
currently around 60%. Although this looks good for the future of email, the majority of what is sent is
unwanted. Tim Walters, senior analyst at the technology research company Forrester Research, said that,
even though email wastes a great deal of time, it's still used daily by 85% of workers. He added: 'Email
isn't a beast to be killed. Sometimes it's the most appropriate tool for communication.' What could replace
email in the workplace? Breton has introduced the Atos Wiki, which allows all employees to communicate
with each other, and Office Communicator, the company's online chat system which allows video
conferencing, file and application sharing.
Although email might be dying, it will take time to disappear, thanks to its proven success. For
example, without a ready audience through email, the website Groupon would not have built a network
of 143 million subscribers. And more than 107 trillion emails will be sent this year. On the other hand,
despite the popularity of instant messages, the IM industry is hampered by services which do not
communicate with each other.
