EN 501:1994

0 Introduction
Figure 1 indicates the position of this standard in the CEN framework of standards

Figure 1 — Framework of standards
In this standard the performance of the product has been defined as far as possible in terms of a number
of type tests.
The performance of a roof constructed with these products depends not only on the properties of the product
as it is required by this standard, but also on the design, construction and performance of the roof as a
whole in relation to the environment and conditions of use.

1 Scope
This European Standard specifies requirements for roofing products used for assembly into coverings for
pitched roofs, made from Zinc-copper-titanium1) alloy sheet with or without additional coatings.
The standard establishes the general characteristics, definitions, labelling and quality control for the
products. Products can be prefabricated or semiformed products (e.g. interlocking tiles, slates, flashings)
as well as strip, coil, sheet for on-site-formed applications (e.g. standing seam roofs, roll cap).
The standard applies to all discontinuously laid and fully supported roofing made of Zinc-copper-titanium
alloy (Zn-Cu-Ti). No requirements for application (e.g. methods of fixing, supporting construction, design

of roof system, execution of connections and flashings) are included. It defines the requirements for roofing
products made from zinc sheets, slit coils, coils and cut lengths to comply with normal service conditions.
NOTE The standard deals partly with flat products, partly with formed (prefabricated) products. Valuable information regarding
preformed products is found in prEN 506.

4 Requirements
4.1 General
Elements made of sheets, cut lengths, coils and slit coils can be cut, bent, seamed, formed and soldered
without difficulty within the given limits of the properties listed in the respective material specifications.
The product properties depend upon its shape and the material used. Requirements for materials are
specified in prEN 988.
The material tests (metal sheet, paint, surface treatment, etc.) are the responsibility of the material
manufacturer and will be supplied on request by the product manufacturer.
In this standard account is taken as far as possible of the essential requirements in the Construction
Products Directive.
4.2 Material requirements
4.2.1 General
The Zinc-copper-titanium alloy can be either cast in slabs or continuously cast. These shall be rolled into
coils. The sheets and cut lengths are cut from coils or slit coils.
Zinc-copper-titanium alloy is suitable for fabrication of fully supported roofing products either in an
industrial process or by an on-site process.
4.2.2 Chemical composition

The chemical composition is specified in prEN 988.
4.2.3 Physical and mechanical properties
The physical and mechanical properties are specified in prEN 988.
4.2.4 Organic coatings or chemical treatments on zinc sheet
Coatings shall be selected depending on processing and service conditions.
Within this standard, specified organic coatings are acrylic paint coating (AY), polyester (SP) or
silicon-polyester (SP-SI) paint coating, polyvinylidene fluoride paint coating (PVDF),
polyvinylchloride(plastisol) coating [PVC(P)]. Chemical treatment may be used to provide a preweathered
surface (PW).
4.2.5 Surface appearance of zinc without additional organic coating
The surface of the product shall be smooth; i.e. free from large blisters. Superficial striations, small blisters
and rolling marks are acceptable insofar as they do not hamper fabrication.
Surface flaws such as white rust, grease or oil marks are acceptable since they fade, as the weathering
patina forms, without undermining the properties of the metal.
4.3 Product requirements
4.3.1 Mechanical properties
Mechanical properties are specified in prEN 988.
4.3.2 Dimensions and tolerances
Dimensions and tolerances of sheet and coil are specified in prEN 988. The minimum nominal thickness
allowed for fully supported roofing products is 0,6 mm.
4.3.3 Shape and tolerances for formed (prefabricated) products
Formed (prefabricated) products are divided into two categories:
a) those to be joined by on-site folding processes
b) those to be joined without on-site folding processes

6

EN 501:1994

4.3.3.1 Products with on-site folded joints
The shape and the tolerances are to be agreed by purchaser and customer according to the application.
They depend especially on the technical and architectural requirements and on the folding machines and
other equipment used.
4.3.3.2 Products without on-site folded joints
Depending on dimensional requirements for the product, matching requirements and fabrication, values
may be agreed at the time of ordering.
However, if no dimensional tolerances are specified, the minimum tolerances given in Table 1 have to be
met (measured without load, continuously supported, at a sample temperature of 20 °C ± 2 °C).

Definitions of geometrical shapes are given in 3.2. Measurements are made at 200 mm from the ends of the
product, see 3.2.

4.3.4 Safety in case of fire
The requirements regarding fire are specified in EN ... (CEN/TC 127) and in national regulations. National
regulations specify the requirements regarding spread of flame for organic coatings.
NOTE

All products referred to in this standard are non-combustible and resistant against sparks and heat radiation.

4.3.5 Safety in use, hygiene, health and the environment
Reasonable care, in accordance with appropriate national regulations, should be taken to ensure that
sheets cannot fall from the building during erection and handling, nor cause injury to the operatives hands
from sharp edges. No special precautions need to be taken in the handling and fixing of coated metal roof
sheets.
4.4 Fasteners
Fasteners shall be made from materials that give sufficient mechanical strength and have good durability.
Accepted materials are:
— Zinc-copper-titanium
— galvanized steel
— stainless steel (Cr-Ni)
— aluminium
— tin-plated copper.
Their qualities and dimensions are determined by national Codes of Practice and/or regulations.

5 Sampling and test methods
5.1 Flat products
The sampling and test methods are specified in prEN 988.
5.2 Formed (prefabricated) products
5.2.1 Sampling
The purchaser or his representative may select from each delivery the number of products required for the
tests.
5.2.2 Testing

5.2.2.1 General
The products may be supplied with or without testing for compliance with the requirements.

Any instructions for handling, storage, net or gross weight (kg) shall be clearly visible on package.
7.2 Packaging
The type of packaging shall be determined by the supplier who shall make it suitable for normal conditions
of transport. The packaging shall never impair the quality of the product.
NOTE If severe service conditions are expected during transportation, storage or processing the product may be supplied with an
additional protection of a temporary, strippable film, wax or oil, by agreement.
Type, thickness, adhesion properties, formability, tear strength and light fastness are to be taken into consideration when choosing
protective films.
All protective films can only be exposed to outdoor weathering for a limited period without deterioration.

7.3 Transport, storage and handling
At delivery, the goods shall be handled with care to maintain the quality of the product.
The products shall be dispatched and stored in conditions which protect them from humidity and
condensation.
Moisture, in particular condensation inside packages, may lead to the formation of stains. If there is
prolonged contact with moisture there may be further aesthetic damage to the product, particularly the
formation of white rust.
The goods shall be stored under a ventilated shelter (e.g. covered warehouse or under a tarpaulin). Goods
shall be separated from the ground by battens which allow enough space for good ventilation. Care shall
be taken to avoid permanent deformation of sheets, coils, slit coils and cut lengths or prefabricated
