With the help of outside sources study
further the phenomenon of speaking in
t o n g u e s (glossolalia).20 Concerning the
situation at Corinth, there are two di erent
views as to the exact nature of the tongues:
(1) they were the same kind of utterances
such as were spoken on the day of Pentecost
(Acts 2:1-13) — languages foreign and
unintelligible to the speakers, but native and
intelligible to di erent groups of hearers; or
(2) they were ecstatic utterances of a
nonexistent language, understood by the
listeners only through an interpreter.
