FIGURE 111.31 Common avulsion injuries of the pelvis: anterior-inferior iliac spine (A),
anterior-superior iliac spine (B), and ischial tuberosity (C).
ACETABULAR FRACTURES . Acetabular fractures are rare in children, but may be
associated with hip joint dislocation. If major pelvic disruption is present, the
injury should be treated like a double break in the pelvic ring. Early orthopedic
consultation should be obtained for these fractures.
Disposition . Patients with avulsion fractures may be discharged with crutches
and non–weight-bearing status with orthopedic follow-up. Those with pelvic and
acetabular fractures should be admitted to the hospital for further orthopedic care.
