Patients with psychosis due to a medical condition require hospitalization
for further evaluation and subspecialty consultation.
Clinical Recognition: Psychosis due to Psychiatric Causes
Brief Psychotic Episode. Brief psychotic episode is a time-limited loss of
reality, often triggered by distressing events. The acuteness of the clinical
presentation and its precipitating events differentiates brief psychotic
episode from PTSD. Different traumatic experiences, including physical or
sexual abuse, rape, homelessness, and running away, may elicit a reactive
psychosis. Diagnosis is made after complete medical evaluation and
psychiatry consultation.
