Intertrochanteric fractures . These fractures are relatively uncommon in children
and adolescents and have a lower risk of complications. Orthopedics should be
consulted urgently. Nondisplaced or minimally displaced fractures may be treated
with a spica cast for 6 to 8 weeks. With significantly displaced fractures, internal
fixation may be necessary to attain appropriate alignment.
Disposition. Hip dislocations, proximal femur fractures, displaced femoral neck
fractures, and intertrochanteric fractures should be admitted to the hospital for
orthopedic management.
