Abstract
Thischapteraddressesstate-of-the-artscreeningforseveralformsof
pediatricheartdisease.Itcoverstopicsthatincludefetalechocardiographic
screening,neonatalpulseoximetryscreeningforcriticalcongenitalheart
disease,screeningforentitiesthatareassociatedwithsuddencardiacdeath,
screeningforatheroscleroticcardiovascularriskfactors,and
neurodevelopmentalscreening.Admittedlyseveraloftheseentitiesare
currentlyorhavepreviouslybeensomewhatcontroversial.However,the
intentofallthesescreeningendeavorsistoidentifypotentiallycriticaland
ultimatelyat-riskdiseasewellbeforeitmightbecomecritical.The
resourcesneededandthenuancesofeachofthesescreeningstrategiesare
discussedingreatdetailtoupdatereadersonspecificentitiesandthe
strategiesandpresumedoutcomesofeachscreeningstrategy.Werecognize
thatdatawillcontinuetobeaccumulatedandrefined,aswillthescreening
strategies,tocontinuetooptimizethebestoutcomesthatmightbe
generatedbythesestrategies.Ouraimistocontinuetoadvocateforthebest
strategiesthatleadtothelowestratesofmorbidityandmortality.
