If the eyes are involved (something that should always be considered if a
caustic has splashed on the face), provide copious irrigation for at least 15
minutes, with longer periods for crystalline caustics. Perform pH testing of fluids
in the ocular cul-de-sac after irrigation to confirm that caustics have been
neutralized; the normal pH of tears is 7. Alkali eye injuries require urgent
