lifetime risk in the general population. Several risk factors that increase the
likelihood of a child experiencing future nonfebrile seizures have been identified.
These risk factors include a family history of epilepsy, a complex febrile seizure,
and the presence of an underlying neurologic or developmental abnormality.
Importantly, even with two or more of these risk factors, the risk of epilepsy is
only 10%. Thus, for most children with no risk factors, the parents may be
reassured that future epilepsy, although possible, is extremely unlikely.
Furthermore, there is no association between febrile seizures and any type of
developmental or learning disabilities.
