Theunderlyingdiagnosespriortotransplantationhavechangedovertime.In
infantsyoungerthan1yearofage,congenitalheartdiseasehasremainedthe
mostcommonunderlyingdiagnosis,althoughtheproportionofinfantrecipients
withcardiomyopathyhasalmostdoubledovertimetoalmost40%inthemost
recentera(Fig.67.4).Cardiomyopathyremainsthemaindiagnosisamongthe
olderagegroups(Figs.67.5to67.7).Indicationsfortransplantationalsoshow
geographicvariation,withcongenitalheartdiseaseandretransplantationboth
morecommoninNorthAmericacomparedwithEuropeandtherestoftheworld
(Fig.67.8).2
