Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a benign but rapidly growing
osteolytic pigmented lesion of neural crest origin, most commonly presenting
between 1 and 6 months of age ( Fig. 52.4 ). It appears as a blue or black
lobulated sessile mass, often arising from the maxilla. Surgical treatment is
usually curative. Intraoral cases of the non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis juvenile
xanthogranuloma have been reported, presenting as firm papular or nodular
mucosal lesions. In addition, neurofibromas associated with neurofibromatosis
may be found in the oral cavity.
