aorticarchrelativetothetracheaandthepatternofbranchingofthe
brachiocephalicarteries:
■Leftaorticarchwithaberrantrightsubclavianor
brachiocephalicartery
■Rightaorticarchwithaberrantleftsubclavianor
brachiocephalicartery
■Rightaorticarchwithmirror-imagebranching
■Doubleaorticarch
Mostofthemajoranomaliesproduceacompleteorpartialvascularring
aroundthetracheaandesophagus.Theonlyexceptionistheclassicformofright
aorticarchwithmirror-imagebranching.Aberrantoriginofasubclavianor
brachiocephalicbranchoftheaorticarchproducesencirclementofthetrachea
andesophagusbecausetheanomalousarterytakesaretroesophagealcourse.The
arterialduct,regardlessofwhetheritispatentorligamentous,mayalso
contributetoencirclementofthetracheaandesophagus.Occasionallythedistal
aorticarchitselfhasaretroesophagealcoursethatcausesesophagealand
trachealcompression.Thereforetheassessmentanddescriptionoftheanomalies
shouldincludedescriptionof:
■Thepositionoftheaorticarchrelativetothe
trachea
■Thelocationofthemostproximalpartofthe
descendingaortainrelationtothespine
■Thepresenceorabsenceofanaberrantbranch
■Theoriginandinsertionofthepatentor
ligamentousarterialductor,rarely,ducts
