CHAPTER 92 ■ GYNECOLOGY EMERGENCIES
PAYAL K. GALA, ALETHA Y. AKERS, MEG WOLFF
GOALS OF EMERGENCY CARE
Pediatric gynecologic complaints are common and are often accompanied by
considerable anxiety. The goals of evaluation in the emergency department (ED)
are to identify life-threatening etiologies, such as ruptured ectopic pregnancy, to
ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment of nonemergency etiologies, such as
infection and disorders of menstruation, and to ensure appropriate follow-up care
with subspecialists or the primary care physician.
KEY POINTS
Pregnancy should be considered in all adolescent patients presenting
to the emergency department.
Patients with severe abnormal uterine bleeding should be quickly
assessed for hemodynamic instability.
Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to long-term pain and dysfunction
if the diagnosis is missed or the condition is inadequately treated.
