Chronic abdominal pain may occur as a result of many of the conditions listed in
Table 53.1 . Colic is a common cause of recurrent or chronic abdominal pain in
infants younger than 3 months of age, but should only be considered if the pain is
not accompanied by other findings or symptoms (see Chapter 20 Crying ). Other
causes of recurrent abdominal pain in infants must also be considered. These
include gastroesophageal reflux, intussusception; malrotation with intermittent
volvulus; mild-protein allergy; and various malabsorptive diseases such as cystic
fibrosis, celiac disease, and lactase deficiency.
