used to remove the foreign object, depending on the institution. It is rare for a
patient with an aspirated foreign object to require a tracheostomy or thoracotomy.
Potential postoperative complications after removal of an aspirated foreign body
include atelectasis, postobstructive pneumonia, stridor, bronchospasm,
laryngospasm, and retained foreign body. The longer the foreign body is retained,
the more likely it is for complications to occur.
