The Caribbean Travel Guide

By

Matias & Miriam

Get the best out of your guide
Dream about your perfect itinerary
As you flip through the pages, ask yourself where you would like to go. In
what order? How much time do you want to spend there? Would you like
to go one location at a time or on a multi-location trip?
Use the guide as a starting point
We could not possibly cover everything there is to know about these
extraordinary destinations. Get excited about connecting with other likeminded world travel enthusiasts. The best possible outcome will generally
come from the advice of people that have been where you are. We have
made it easy for you by attaching a special invitation to join our tribe
without any cost or strings attached (more on that later).
Plan around peak seasons for good deals
It is no secret that most tourism is concentrated in the hot months. The
peak season can translate into higher than usual fares, and you can combat
this by booking way ahead of time or outside the high seasons. The
Caribbean is a spectacle almost any time of the year (Take it from us, we
have been there a few times during Christmas and New Year’s).
Book the vacation you can afford
Over the years, we have learned that paying for your vacation in advance
and booking the correct type is super important. You are more likely to
enjoy modest getaways often than huge expensive month-long vacations
once every three years. Be honest with yourself (and your family) when

assessing where, how, and when to go. We have found that automating a
monthly saving amount destined for vacation is a smart way to tackle it,
and it will feel seamless.

INTRODUCTION

The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been,
and all the memories we’ve made along the way.” – Anon. The world
has become more accessible than ever before. The avenues we use to
connect, facilitated by technology, have made the world a smaller place.
Ironically, all the new forms of communication have left more humans
disconnected than ever before. We have hectic lives and full schedules;
we seem to forget that life must be appreciated and filled with memorable
experiences. Each of us has the gift of one life; our responsibility is to
focus on the milestones and events that truly matter. We, as people, are
not destined to be stuck in one place. We must go outside our comfort
zone and search for the kind of moments that will bring meaning and
hope. Exploring foreign lands may seem daunting and hard to reach to
the average person. Some have idealized world-traveling to the point they
believe it is only accessible to the rich and famous.
Take a journey to a place you will feel the grains of the sand between
your fingers and toes, savoring the breeze as it gently touches your face—
exploring the heights of the mountains and the depths of the seas—seeing
the smiles of the locals from around the world and smelling the enigmatic
scent of their cuisines being prepared right before your eyes. Envision
a network of islands that seem to glitter like tiny diamonds against the
turquoise waters of the Atlantic. Envision one day, God and the angels

frolicked around the waters of the Earth and dropped a precious necklace
in the vast ocean. It is paradise, an unbelievable series of picturesque islands
that connect the Americas perfectly. While one may assume these islands
look similar, each Caribbean Island exhibits a peculiar vibe and culture.
The most thoughtful arrangement of words cannot entirely describe the
spectacular grandeur of the Caribbean. This destination will revolutionize
the concept of a fast-paced life by seducing you into the here and now on
island time. Enjoy the process of taking yourself away from the routine of
life to a realm of wonder you did not feel you deserved. Let us explore why
this part of the world is calling your name.
The Caribbean does superb work of providing the appropriate setting for
a dream vacation. The reality is that this place will help you connect with
an unapologetically colorful community. You can find the peace you have

07

been longing for and the human connection we all crave. Travel to the
islands and discover the best parts of yourself, an environment that will
take your breath away.
Whether traveling by air or by sea, the Caribbean will have something new
for you if you are willing to immerse yourself into the moment. We decided
to share the extraordinary life experiences we have had through travel
because we knew it would resonate with many. Here is a book that will not
describe all the technicalities of a fantastic vacation; instead, it encapsulates
what travel should be – meaningful and inspiring. The idea behind our
travel guide is to provide practical travel information and condensation
of the emotions, stories, and experiences that we have encountered in the
hope of displaying what travel should be, based on a region that has made
us feel grateful and curious. We intend to prove to the reader that a journey

does not need to be expensive or comfortable; instead, travel should make
you feel and learn something that no routine in the office or lesson in
school could ever teach you. May the words on the page inspire you to see
that life is best served with little luxuries – like a carefree day under the
palm fronds and gazing beyond the undulating waves of the sea – without
breaking the bank. Besides, life itself is a vacation – and you are the guest
of honor. We hope that this written effort will be the key to unlocking your
heart and mind to try and experience new things, see the world with eyes
wide open, and have a heart full of love and joy. The Caribbean is waiting
graciously, and we encourage you to let this book be your passport to a
different kind of travel. We warmly welcome you to a book with pages
that will rekindle your desire to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and make you
realize that it is okay to take things a little slower and get lost in a vast
shoreline to find a missing piece of yourself. The intention behind our
commentary is love, passion, and authenticity; we hope to awaken these
feelings in you as well. Consider this book as your piece of encouragement.
It is about the richness of experience and the vividness of the memories
that come with it.
Who exactly is on the other side talking to you? We propose a friendship
with you; we believe you will absorb and internalize the content in the most
beneficial way by getting to know us. Our names are Matias & Miriam; we
have traveled the world and have been fortunate to experience so much
in the last nine years. We were born into separate cultures, often seeing
the world through different lenses. The travels we have had, have been

08

under varying budgets that have allowed us to grow into an authority
figure amongst friends and family. We want to share the knowledge we

have harvested because we feel it would be valuable to the world; in that
spirit, we offer you all we know to get you to and around our favorite place
ever, The Caribbean.

Chapter I:

THE
BAHAMAS

U

ndulating. Captivating. Alluring. The Bahamas is beautiful, surreal as
it captures the attention of countless visitors all over the globe, from
casual to ultra-wealthy travelers. It is not surprising that it is a mainstay of
any Top 5 most visited Caribbean islands references.
This island offers the trademark welcoming vibe of the Caribbean. This
destination is often mistaken to be only for those who’ve got tons of cash
to spend. There are a variety of choices for all budgets. The Bahamas is,
without a doubt, one of the more established and developed locations in
the Caribbean.

One major win, should you embark on an adventure to The Bahamas,
is convenience. It offers uncompromising comfort wherever you go. The
infrastructure of this country is equipped to handle tourism seamlessly
better than other surrounding islands.
As a country that relies heavily on tourism, The Bahamas constantly
improves its developments and programs to attract local and international
tourists and maintain the life and strength of this industry. A considerable
number of visitors are from cruise ships, accounting for up to 70% of all
visitors on average per year. In 2019, the country welcomed more than 7
million tourists.

Cultural Overview
The Bahamas is embellished with various cultural influences, thanks to its
rich historical chapters. The history of The Bahamas is extensive, as it
goes back as early as 800 AD when the first inhabitants moved to the area.

12

The country witnessed a series of cultural transitions, from the Spanish
occupation to the English settlers and even pirates. This nation endured
plenty of historical shifts, including slavery and World War Two. These
were the formative details that shaped The Bahamas into how we know
it today. These shifts are also why there is a pervasive interconnectedness
within the melting pot that is Bahamian culture.

Moving Around
The Bahamas has a paved road system comparable to any first-world
country; hence, you will not have any restrictions with transportation via
any motorized vehicle around the island. This country drives to the left,

which you should consider before you decide to drive. Whether starting
from the airport or the cruise dock, shuttle services, taxis, and private car
rental services are readily available. Many domestic airlines and hospitality
brands offer transportation services to reduce stress and streamline your
travel experience.

13

Inter-island transportation is possible via ships and flights. This destination
boasts an astounding 61 airports, with three primary airports, which are:

Lynden Pindling International Airport (formerly known as Nassau
International Airport)
Grand Bahama Airport
Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (formerly known as
Marsh Harbour Airport)

The international flight network primarily catered by Lynden Pindling
International Airport has inbound and outbound flights from the United
States, Canada, and nearby Caribbean destinations. Lynden Pindling
Airport is one of the busiest airports in the region. The domestic travel
network is also very well-connected between islands, which means moving
around is a breeze.
The Bahamas is a premier cruise ship destination, one of the preferred
locations for tourists to include in any cruise itinerary. There are 19 ports
to choose from in The Bahamas, with more than ten major cruise ship

companies operating within its borders. Each port of call with a range of
budget and accommodation options.

Gastronomy
Food is our favorite part to showcase because the destination’s cuisine
speaks volumes about its diverse culture. Bahamian cuisine boasts a parade
of flavors, eclectic tastes, and meticulous presentation. They say you always
eat with your eyes first, and the Bahamian cuisine is here to impress. While
there are interlinking similarities between the islands, some details make
each cuisine stand out on its own, depending on its historical significance,
intercultural influence, and geographical considerations.
The Bahamian cuisine integrates various ingredients in its menus. Some star
players are fish, crabs, lobsters, conch, peas, rice, pork, and even tropical
fruits. According to experts, the closest relative of the Bahamian cuisine is

14

15

the United States “Southern” cuisine. Some foodstuffs are imported into
the country to create The Bahamas flavor.
Conch is the dish that you should not miss whenever you’re in The
Bahamas. Conch is considered the national dish; it can be prepared in a
multitude of ways, including being served raw with lime juice, stewed, or
deep-fried. There’s also the ever-popular crab, often served as crab fat
and dough or as baked crab. The most popular fish dish is fresh catch
served in escabeche style, cooked in a mixture of vinegar or lime juice
with some seasoning. Staple pork and chicken or “mutton” are available

in most eateries. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there are still
some establishments that serve iguana. “Fire engine” (a dish made with
steamed rice and corned beef) is yet another local fare worth trying that is
interesting and inexpensive.
Don’t feel like trying out local gastronomy? Do not worry; you can find
Italian, Mexican, Chinese, American, and other beloved international
cuisines across the island. As we mentioned earlier in the chapter, regarding
development, visiting this island comes with a sizable array of choices for
food.

Budgeting the Tummy
The budget for your daily food expenses in The Bahamas will ultimately
depend on your preferences and adventurousness. The range of cuisines
and prices is quite broad, with affordable options and expensive ones. An
average for a meal in Nassau is $18 per person, but it can go up as high as
you are willing to pay.

16

Places to Eat Worth Checking Out
Here is an overview of outstanding destinations where you can sink
your teeth into Bahamian cuisine while enjoying Bahamian hospitality.
These places offer a wide array of selections showcasing both local and
international fare.

Baha Mar $
Cable Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Nassau. Aside
from being a very accessible beach destination, it is also home to a
luxurious resort complex called Baha Mar. The luxury complements

the vintage-inspired airstreams that are bursting with flavor and color
for that entertaining vibe. You might be surprised to learn that there
are fantastic food trucks equipped with world-class quick bites here.
One of the trucks is “El Jefe,” serving Mexican jewels that include
margaritas and tacos. Another truck is “Sandy Dog” if you happen
to be craving an elevated version of the standard hotdog experience.

Juice.

The Coral at Atlantis $$$
The Coral at Atlantis exudes the distinct Caribbean charm with an
international kick. Considered a high-end restaurant complex, The
Coral at Atlantis is home to Sun & Ice gelateria, inspired by the local
flavors and colors. Come for exceptional exotic flavors like Junkanoo,
a red velvet gelato, and Mango Skin, a marriage of avocado and
mango flavors. Lastly, don’t miss Auntie Mar, which is guava-duff
ice cream. If you’re looking for a chill way to end the day, this place
is worth checking out.

Humidor Churrascaria $$$
Located at the Graycliff Hotel, Humidor Churrascaria is an
unapologetic event of its own. This establishment presents an
entire lineup of meats prepared to capture your senses and bring
you to a different level of dining grounded in Brazilian roots. This
recommendation is a must for meat lovers.

Rest and Slumber

Like any other adventure in the Caribbean, accommodation options in The
Bahamas can be customized to fit your preferences. There is sizable room
for diverse budgets and styles. The bulk of most premium establishments
are centered in Nassau. However, the other islands offer great options as
well.
The Bahamas, as what you would expect in a tropical paradise, offers
options from the simplest hammock or castaway-style hostels to exquisite
and luxurious hotels that are indeed best in class. Let us help you explore the
right place to lay your head down after a day of adventure and memories.

Ocean Front Hostel and Resort Viking Hill at
Love Beach
Average Cost Per Person Per Night: $48.00
Another great option is the Ocean Front Hostel and Resort Viking
Hill at Love Beach. The name is a mouthful, but it offers simple
yet comfortable bunk beds in a dormitory-style setup. We have
stayed here while backpacking and have felt a sense of community

unmatched. Be mindful that it is not recommended to travel with
high-value items as security can be loose at hostels.

Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas
Average Cost Per Person Per Night: $280.00
Full disclosure, in general, we are not huge fans of “all-inclusive
hotels.” This recommendation, however, is one that we chose
because of its high quality and convenience. The Warwick Paradise
Island Bahamas is an adults-only property that fuses fun and

21

relaxation to create magic. The Warwick has everything you need
available within the premises. Food (buffets + restaurants), drinks,
entertainment, and gratuities are included in the price. There are also
room upgrades and premium services you can pay for should they
pique your interest. This recommendation is directed to travelers
that want to take it easy and not have to go anywhere at a more or
less fixed budget.

Graycliff Hotel
Average Cost Per Person Per Night: $110.00
Average Cost Per Person Per Night: $300.00
The most expensive stay in our selection of properties is the
Graycliff Hotel, which exhibits a different kind of cool. Restored
from a mansion built in 1740, the hotel takes you back in time and
puts you in a royal palace dead center of paradise. This place gives
off a vintage vibe submerging you into its rich historical significance.

Moreover, it is less than half an hour away from the Lyndon Pindling
International Airport and just a few minutes’ walk from the National
Art Gallery. Graycliff Hotel is a magnificent and high-end stay we
guarantee you will love.

Postcard-worthy Photo Ops & Points of Interest
The Bahamas is delicately decorated by nature and embellished with manmade wonders worth seeing. Its pure cultural heritage and its photogenic
locations are sure to wow your social media presence. The Bahamas has
been a staple shooting spot for several media productions, including
movies like Thunderball and Casino Royale, as well as Into the Blue and Flipper.
Nassau also hosted the Miss Universe pageant and inspired Assassin’s Creed
IV: Black Flag (the video game).

Nassau
For the best overview you can get about The Bahamas, you only
need to look at its most prominent and capital city – Nassau. Being
the cradle of the country’s history and culture, Nassau alone can
be a gleaming reason why you should visit The Bahamas. Nassau is
the primary cruise port, so everything is positioned close by design.
Some of the destinations that are within a couple of minutes’ worth
of drive are:

Atlantis Bahamas
Cable Beach
Queen’s Staircase
Pirates of Nassau
Nassau Straw Market
Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation
Islas Out

Eleuthera-

Known for its beaches with pink sand, caves, and
casual swimming and snorkeling. Visitors who would love to
experience paradise in every corner of their vacation will fall in love
with this island. This lovely island is considerably less populated than
New Providence, where Nassau is located. We consider Eleuthera to

23

be the book definition of a beach escape.
Lat long coordinate: 24.956269180664624, -76.18612289479421

Pig Beach-

Pig Beach is one fascinating destination you do
not want to miss. Big Major Cay or “Pig Beach” is in the Exuma

Cays, a series of uninhabited islands. Exuma possesses the unique
feature of feral pigs, stray cats, goats, and other roaming animals.
Swimming with the pigs is the thing to do; one can purchase an
excursion through locals. We would not advise swimming with the
pigs independently since most people are not trained or familiar with
their behavior. Pig Beach can be reached in two hours via speed boat
if you are traveling from Nassau. We recommend getting there by
party boat, always a good time!
Lat long coordinate: 24.183929558925364, -76.45658630345208

Green Turtle Cay- Green Turtle Cay is a barrier island just
off Great Abaco that can only be reached via ferry or boat from the
mainland. Considered a member island of the “Abaco Out Islands,”
Green Turtle Cay is approximately 3 miles long and a mere half a
mile wide. It got its name because lots of green turtles previously
inhabited the area. Green Turtle Cay is a very relaxed destination
with full-service hotels and resorts with quaint marinas.
