Alternatives Unlimited (AU)
helps to improve student
learning in reading and
mathematics by providing
individual and small group
tutoring (1 to 5 student ratio).
AU develops a plan for each
student which includes
prescriptive instructional
interventions and materials
(curriculum packages) that the
tutor will utilize to assist with
student development of
specified grade level skills.
Utilizing a student-centered,
strength based approach, AU
helps students develop the
fundamental skills that provide a
strong foundation for learning
more advanced concepts and
content. Harcourt Publishing
materials are utilized in grades
K-5 and the Holt series is
utilized in grades six through
high school. All instructional
materials are designed to
supplement regular classroom
instruction. Note: Every student
will receive a $5 gift card from a
local department store or
restaurant for each week of
perfect attendance defined as
present from beginning to end of
at least two sessions in any
given week.
AU strives to place highly
qualified tutors with all students.
Tutors will first be recruited
from (WV) districts where
tutoring is being delivered. AU
then recruits credentialed
teachers from outside the
district.
Evidence of effectiveness has
been submitted regarding use of
the program in California (AU
has not yet provided tutoring in
WV). An AU evaluation
proposes that, for the 2005-2006
school year, 21 students
completed the full 30 hour
program. Eleven of the students
completed a post assessment and
eight made some gains in
reading and mathematics scores
(individual students gained from
2 to 22 points on post program
scoring). The combined mean
gain for the group was 6.4 points
or an increase of 9.5%.

fast as their ability will allow or
as slowly as necessary to achieve
success.
Fully certified teachers are
involved in providing instruction
via the Internet. Every teacher
has a minimum of a bachelor’s
degree and is trained in six online courses that familiarize them
with every aspect of the
instructional program. Teachers
are recruited in specific states
through networking, online
applications, and advertisements.
Teachers may be retired or
actively employed.
The Babbage Net school has
been providing instruction via the
Internet since 1996. The program
received an award from the

Bright Sky Learning provides
quality research-based reading

that is based upon locating gaps
in student knowledge through
assessment. Each student’s
learning plan is collaboratively
developed from data derived
from the Bright Sky Learning
assessments and the school
district, with input from parents
and students. The overall length
of the program is approximately
12 weeks (not including
holidays). Significant reading
and mathematics grade level
increases have been realized
after 20 hours of instruction. All
materials are provided. Bright
Sky Monitoring is an online
database used for tracking
attendance, assessment scores
and student progress. Progress
reports are distributed as
required to the parents and to the
LEA. Embedded assessments
monitor progress, evaluate the
program and reveal further
remediation needs. This
dynamic process identifies new
areas requiring help or practice
which are documented and
addressed immediately. Bright
Sky Learning offers both small
group and secure Internet based
tutoring.
All staff receives training and
certification as a Certified Smart
Way Reading and Spelling
Coach. Non-certified
supervisory staff is to have, at a
minimum, two years of college,
an associate’s or bachelor’s
degree or its equivalent. All staff
must pass required background
clearances. Bright Sky Learning
complies with all state and
district hiring policies and
procedures. Bright Sky
Learning places priority on
hiring instructor applicants with
experience in working with
children, especially Title 1
students, non-English speaking
populations and students with
disabilities. Professional training
may include the theory on the
Bright Sky Learning curriculum,
the findings of the National
Reading Panel and the National
Research Council of
Mathematics, an orientation to
the West Virginia Content
Standards in reading and/or
mathematics and an orientation
regarding the history of teaching
reading. Supervisory staff
receives training in the use of
Bright Sky Monitoring tracking
software.
Independent research of the
reading program has shown
students gained approximately
1.5 grade levels with 20+ hours
of instruction, substantially
higher with 40+ hours. Test
measurements included the
WRAT3 Reading; Woodcock
Johnson III Letter-Word

Passport Learning is an award
winning computerized reading
program that targets the roots of
reading deficiencies and
eliminates them. Students
improve their reading skills by as
much as 2.5 grade levels in as
little as 25 hours of training. All
work is done on a computer, but
a trained instructor is available to
encourage, help, and assist. This
computerized course, which
offers lasting benefits, includes
drills, exercises, checkups and
awards as the student completes
each level. It also permits a
student to work at his/her own
pace.
Staff members providing
services for Passport Learning
have a minimum of a bachelor’s
degree in education. Combined,
the teaching staff has over 50
years of teaching experience and
all have been subject to
intensive, in-depth training in
reading intervention using the
Passport Learning system. The
staff members are continuously
informed and trained on new
developments in reading
interventions and Passport
Learning. Experience within the
staff includes working with
students who are performing
below grade level in reading, low
socioeconomic students, ADHD
students, and children with
dyslexia.
Two intervention follow up
studies were conducted in
schools where Passport Learning
provided services.
The first was an effective
remedial program for
underachieving, socially
disadvantaged adolescents in
Texas. All students were pre and
post tested with the Wide Range
Achievement Test – (revised) and
the Gallistel-Ellis Test of Coding
Skills. Word recognition skills
increased 1.25 grade levels while
the phonetic knowledge of words
increased by 7%.
Similar results were reported at a
second site in California.
The “Academy of Reading”
training program was developed
in 1986 by two
neuropsychologists based on
scientific and educational
research. While these individuals
do not work directly with the
students, they continue to guide
the program.

The Princeton Review
Statewide
The Princeton Review SES program
provides live instruction in a small
group setting that is designed to work
with the needs of individual students in
grades 3-12. After considering the
desired program length and assessment
preferences outlined by each district, a
customized course syllabus will be
designed for each program site and
student. A director will manage all
Princeton Review teachers within the
school at the program site, maintaining
on-going communication with the
school administration and the
Princeton Review’s local office.
Upon enrollment, students will be
administered a pre test. Following a
personalized analysis of initial pre test
data, teachers assess each student’s
particular needs. Utilizing this
information, the general course work is
supplemented with individual skill
review activities.
Time and location of services will be
organized on a district basis. When
possible, the services will be provided
at district schools. Timelines will be
established at the start of the course
and may vary depending upon course
length and instructional subjects. In
order to maximize the effectiveness of
the program, a minimum course length
of 20 hours is recommended.
All instructors are certified
teachers who are required to
pass an entrance examination
and participate in a live
audition. Princeton review only
recruits teachers with
substantial experience in the
specific student level for which
they are recruited.
All Princeton Review staff
must participate in a training
