I. INTRODUCTION
“Tourism allows us to enrich our lives with new experiences, enjoy and be
taught, learn to respect other cultures, make friends, and above all, dedicate
ourselves to international cooperation and world peace” (Jules Verne).
Traveling not only helps us to explore the world, expand our knowledge of
the universe, and increase our own experience but also acts as a panacea to help
soothe and comfort the spirit, and nourish the soul. Because of that, we love to
travel, we have traveled to many places, and discovered many lands in all countries
around the world. Among the countries that we have been to, Ethiopia is a very
special country. And when we came here for a summer vacation with our family,
this country located in the east of Africa brought back so many memories and
emotions that we will never forget in our life. That is also the reason why we chose
this topic to share the good memories that we have spent in Ethiopia.
II. BODY
A. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ETHIOPIA
1. Overview of Ethiopia
Ethiopia, full name is the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a
country located in the east of Africa. With over 109 million people as of 2019,
Ethiopia is the 12th most populous country in the world. The country has a total
area of 1,100,000 square kilometers. Its capital and largest city are Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia has the second-largest hydroelectric potential in Africa, with more
than 85% of its water coming from the rivers of the Nile and fertile soil, but the
country has experienced a series of famines over the past decade. The 1980s and
these famines were exacerbated by the influence of geopolitics and civil wars,
resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths. However, the country began to
4
recover gradually, and Ethiopia is today the largest economy in East and Central
Africa by GDP and one of the fastest-growing in the world.
2. Ethiopia's history and formation
Ethiopia is also one of the oldest places where humans have ever lived. This
place may be the area where Homo sapiens built the first Middle East and points
around it. Besides Rome, China, and Persia, the Aksum Kingdom of Ethiopia were
considered one of the four most powerful nations in the world in the third century.
During the scramble for Africa, Ethiopia was the only African country besides
Liberia to maintain its sovereignty as an independent nation, and one of only four
African members of the League of Nations.
3. Ethiopia people
The people here have left us with a lot of impressions, especially the
hospitality and the love of the land of our country. And that reminds me of a story:
Once upon a time, two tourists came to Ethiopia. They traveled around the
country visiting roads, mountains, and rivers. The king of Ethiopia invited them
into the palace, held a banquet, and presented them with many precious things.
Then the king sent an official to take the guests off the ship.
“When the two guests were about to get off the train, the official told the
visitor to stop and take off his shoes. He ordered someone to scrape off the dirt on
the soles of the guests' shoes before letting them get off the boat and return to the
country. The two guests were very surprised and asked:
- Why do you have to do this?
The officer replied:
This is our beloved land. We were born here, we die here. On this land, we
grow crops and raise livestock. The land of Ethiopia is our father, mother, and
brother. We have received you as honored guests. The king gave them many rare
5
products. But the land of Ethiopia for us is the most sacred and noble. We cannot
let you take away even a single grain of sand.
Listening to the sincere words of the official, the two guests admired the
Ethiopian people's love for their homeland."
4. Sociocultural
Although Ethiopia is developing very quickly, the education level is still low,
education here is not compulsory, so only 50% of children go to school. The
people's health care regime is still unstable, malnutrition and infectious diseases
such as cholera, malaria, and yellow fever are common diseases. The average life
expectancy in Ethiopia is 40 years old, about 39 years old for men and 42 years old
for women.
B. MEMORABLE VACATION
Excitement suddenly popped into our head. What is this country like? Is it
similar to the heroic praises that appear in literature? What are the landscape and
people like here? Those questions kept pounding in our mind for the next few days.
1. Plan your trip
Reason for the trip:
We are people with a passion for discovering new things, things that
stimulate our imagination and fascination. We love traveling around, even though
we are very young. We have been to many countries around the world and not only
me but almost everyone in our family has the same Hobby to travel. During the
annual summer vacation, our parents often plan to organize vacation trips for us.
This is an opportunity for our family to have time when the whole family can go to
the library together relax, visit and explore. And our brothers and sisters are often
allowed by their parents to freely choose their destination. We always choose the
destination somewhere abroad. And on this trip, We were confused when choosing
6
where we would go with our family. Almost all the countries around us have been
to once, such as ASEAN countries, countries in East Asia, South Asia, some
countries in Europe such as England, France, Spain,... or even countries in America
like the USA, Mexico, Canada.
However, there seems to be one continent that we have never visited, and
that is Africa. An idea flashed through our mind for a visit to Africa. And it was a
coincidence that that night our younger brother was in 3rd grade, and we saw him
reading a rather interesting story about a country located in the faraway Black
Continent. That is the story "Land of love", a story about how the people of
Ethiopia cherish every grain of their land. When we read it, we felt the excitement
about the country and people here and we made a bold decision to discuss with our
parents to visit this country. Although our parents didn't seem to agree at first,
because this is a rather foreign country, after we tried everything to convince them,
they agreed and chose Ethiopia as their destination. Our family is on vacation. Our
family is very excited and looking forward, now we begin to prepare the necessary
luggage for the trip. My idea came up as follows:
The first and most important thing is the choice of means of transportation.
Airplanes are our top priority. Because this trip was planned, all exit procedures
were taken care of by my parents. As for us, we had to stay up late for two days to
hunt for the cheapest airline tickets. Vietnam airline is the airline that our younger
brother and we choose because it is a prestigious national airline with excellent
services.
2. Book room
Where to stay in Ethiopia. This question popped up in our head right after
that. Ethiopia is a poor country with a low education level, so it is difficult to find a
convenient place to stay. There are two options that we choose, one is to stay in a
hotel in the city or a small apartment in the middle of a village. For us, we like to
7
be in places where we can immerse ourselves in the way of life of indigenous
people, to understand their way of life, their traditions. But our two younger
brothers like to stay at the hotel because it is convenient to travel to as well as
many other facilities. In the end, we chose according to their thoughts.
3. Visit famous places
The places that we choose to visit are Harrah City, Lalibela Settlement, Blue
Nile Falls, and Omo valley. These are the places that any visitor to Ethiopia cannot
ignore, it's amazing.
Coming to a foreign country will surely face many difficulties because of
the language barrier. Through research, we learned that the main languages spoken
in this country are: English, Arabic, and Italian. With my English level, we are
quite confident in our ability to communicate. The question now is who will help
us understand if the natives speak Italian and Arabic? It was solved, and now we
have found the right guide to accompany our family on our journey through this
culturally rich country.
One beautiful morning on July 24, 2021… while our brother and sister were
sleeping, a soft voice suddenly spoke up: “Mom's four darlings! Let's get up and
have breakfast… Prepare your luggage and go." What a peaceful summer morning
weather. I shouted… “Oh, we can go out today. That's so great!"
4. Memories in Ethiopia
Our flight lasted more than half a day, and all the members were exhausted,
but we finally arrived in Ethiopia. Appearing in front of my eyes is the wild and
magnificent scenery of the capital of a country - Addis Ababa. A happy satisfaction
because after so long cherished the dream has finally come true. It is completely
different from the capital of Vietnam. There are very few high-rise buildings, and
there are only 5 or 6 floors.
8
Walking around the city, a first impression is that there is a long line of
people, seemingly waiting for something, when asked, it turns out that everyone is
waiting to go. get on the bus. There is not much traffic here. It's also just
rudimentary cars. At first glance, everyone sees it as the "coffin" around the
Vietnamese countryside. But it is also admirable that the indigenous people here
are very neat and careful, it takes a lot of patience to get them to sit on these cars.
After waiting for a while, we were finally picked up by the hotel bus that we were
staying at. People around looked at us and waved their hands in a friendly manner.
In the following days, we took turns to visit the places according to the plan
we had outlined. But we feel so bored when we go with my family. Once in a
while, we decided to ask our parents to let us experience and learn in a style that
we like.
Although the people in Ethiopia seem friendly. But it's also inevitable…
Because it's a poor country, the percentage of beggars and homeless people here is
huge. They live in so-called "slums" or are scattered around small markets. They
look pitiful and pitiful. But no one thinks that they live righteously, but differently,
they are experts in theft. When we landed at the capital airport, people reminded
me a lot about storing things carefully. But we ignored it because we saw the
friendliness and hospitality of the people there in front of our eyes. Then, an ironic
situation happened to us, we were robbed…
Enjoy the food: enjoying the food in Ethiopia is an interesting thing. Along
the way, the restaurants are always open to welcome people to enjoy the food. We
shivered when we saw the food that is considered a specialty here. Our meal that
day was: a giant plate with a thin slice of cake underneath. On top of that are the
fresh things: fresh meat, chopped raw vegetables.
9
5. The strangest things in this country
Coming to the Omo valley, the tradition of putting plates in the mouths of
women in this region made me very curious. We had the opportunity to interact
with a middle-aged woman feeding her baby, she had a large plate in her mouth.
Our guide and we approached, contacted, and talked. She said that, for women in
our ethnic group, people with larger plates on their lips are considered more
beautiful.
We immediately smiled, partly because in our mind we thought why such a
strange culture, partly because we felt sorry for the women there because of the
beauty they had to sacrifice, so much pain tortured pain. We suddenly remembered
that once we knew the women of an ethnic group in ancient China, also because of
their beauty, they had to break and bend to become "lotus' heels" to become
beautiful. Doing so will make it easier to get married. These actions are like
torturing yourself physically. I also took the time to chat with this woman more
about life here so that we could understand and empathize with them.
Through that trip, and through the image of that woman, we feel more and
more in love with our mother, who has always sacrificed silently to protect and
protect us. And we promised ourselves that we would always love our mother very
much, to become a filial and useful sons to society so as not to disappoint our
mother.
III. CONCLUSION
Ethiopia today has developed and changed a lot compared to the time before
we visited. However, we can still feel the fresh air and the magnificent wilderness,
the people here are still the same, they are forever with the same love for their
homeland. Although we have been to many places, the memory of my vacation in
Ethiopia is still a beautiful memory that is hard to stay in our mind, and not only us
10
but our family members all appreciate the carvings that we have cherished. We
have been in the country and the people to the heart of this Africa. We hope that
there will be many opportunities to return to this country in the near future.
