Howmanyofyouhavedietedunsuccessfully?Maybeyou'vedietednotonce,nottwice,butmaybeforalifetime,starvingyourselfordrinkingsomeawfulshake,to
finditworkedonlytemporarily.Youlosetenpounds,takingthreetofourweekstoaccomplishthis,andinoneshortweekend,you'vegaineditallback.
Ithinkthatwehaveallbeenthere,donethat.Dietingsimplydoesnotwork.
I'mgoingtoteachyouthethingsthatdowork.You'regoingtofindoutwhyyouhavegainedweight,orhavealwaysbeenpackingaroundthatextrapoundage.(Most
peopletrytoloseweightwithouttryingtofigureoutwhytheyarecarryingaroundtheextraweight.)

MyStory
Growingup,Iwasalwaysalittlebitround.Iguesssayingroundsoundsawholelotbetterthansayingfat.Ofcourseitwasmybrothersandsisterswhocalledmefat,
nottomentionugly,stupid,andwhateverelsetheycouldthinkof.Childrenaresocruel.Thentherewasmydad,whoalwaystoldmethatIwasn'tfat,thatIwas
prettierthanthebee'sknees.Parentsalwaysthinktheirlittlegirlsarebeautiful.
Mybodysimplydidwhatallchildren'sbodiesdo.Beforeyougothroughagrowingspurt,itseemslikeyoukindofplumpupabit,thenstretchupinheightasyou
grow.AtagetenIwasclosetotheheightIamnow,andsuddenlyasskinnyasarail.Thiswasabenefittome,asIhadtheopportunityatagefifteentodoalittle
modeling.Icouldeatandeatandnevergainanyweight.Iremembermymothertellingmetoslowdownwithmyeatingbecauseitwouldcatchupwithmesomeday.I
wouldcomehomefromschoolandeatasmanyasfivepeanutbutterandjellysandwiches.Itdidn'tcatchupwithme.Istayedskinny,

nottomentiondepressed,andexhibitedmanyothersymptomsofproblems,butIdidn'tknowanybetterbecauseIhadneverfeltanyotherway.Itwassimplyapart
ofme.
Muchlater,Istartedgettingsymptomsofotherproblems.Ihadadegenerativediseaseinmyspine,bursitisinmyhips;theeatinghadfinallycaughtupwithmeandI
wasoverweight,andfeltlikeanoldwoman.Iwasoldbeforemytime.TherewerechiropractorsandphysicaltherapistsIwasseeingonaregularbasis.Iwasinpain
everybreathingmoment.
Thenthingsbegantochange.IapproachedHamptonRoadsPublishingwithmyfirstbook,MindTravelers:PortraitsofFamousPsychicsandHealersofToday.
Theywantedthebook.WritingthatbookwasoneofthemostimportantthingsthatIhadeverdoneformyself.Ifyoucan,imaginethirtyverygiftedpeoplehealing
youinoneformoranother.Thirtypeopleinatwoyearperiod—that'salotofhandsonhealing.
IhadgonetoNewYorkCitytophotographandinterviewRobertZoller,averywell
knownastrologer,whoaskedmeifIalsowantedtohaveDr.R.DonaldPapon,
whoisadoctorofhomeopathicmedicine,inmybook.Iwasthrilledtothinkofincludingthemanwhoisconsideredthedeanofastrology.Ihadboughtmyfirstbook
ofhisin1976.Itwashisdreambook,whichIhaveusedsomuchthatIhavearubberbandaroundittokeepittogether.Dr.Paponagreedtoparticipateinmybook
andIdroveuptoPrincetonfromVirginiaBeachtomeetwithhim.
Afterreturninghomefrommeetingwithhim,Isenthimathankyounoteforbeingapartofmybookandbeingsokindtome.Hisreturnlettercamewithapackage

withhomeopathicremedies.HehadanalyzedmyhealthandconcludedthatIwasamess.Iweighed162pounds.ImightaddthatIwasveryuncomfortableinmy
skin.
Theremedieswereformanythings.Mythyroidwasn'tworking;therewasaremedyforthat.IhadCandida
;therewasanotherremedy.Therewasalsoaremedyfor
parasiteshefoundinmysystem,whichwerepartlyresponsibleformybloatedbelly.Mybloodsugarwasalsodown.
Ihadremediesinthatpackageforeverything.Thoseremedies,littlewhitepillsthatareplacedunderthetonguetodissolve,wouldcuretheseailments.Imustadmit,I
hadverylittlefaithinthis.However,Ifollowedthedoctor'sadvicetotheT—IfiguredIwouldn'tknowifallthiswouldworkunlessIgaveitmybestshot.
IhadtogoonaverystrictdiettogetridoftheCandida,whichisyeast.So,anyfoodordrinkthatfeedsyeast,Ihadtoeliminatefrommydiet.Nowthiswasn'ta
diettoloseweight;itwasadiettokillofftheyeastinmysystem.Thismeantnosugar,noprocessedfoods,yeast,vinegar,mushrooms,wine,orcaffeine.Ithoughtthis
dietwouldbeimpossibleforme,butmydesiretobehealthyandtoloseweightoutweighedthedesiretohavesomesugar.Whenyoutellyourselfthatyoucan'thave
somethingrightnow,it'sveryeasyforyourmindtoletgoofwantingit.Itwasn'tbadatall.ThreemonthslaterIhadmelteddowntoonehundredtwelvepounds.I
startedoutatonesixtytwo.Ihadbeenwearingajuniorsizefifteen,whichwastoosmallforme;Imanagedtopourmyselfintothosejeans.Mostpeoplehadnoidea
thatIweighedthatmuchbecauseIworebaggytops.
Afterthediet,Ihadgonedowntoasizefive.Myskinfeltsogood.IfeltasthoughIhadletgoofanotherperson,thattherehadbeensomeoneelseinthatskinwith
me.

Ihadbeendepressedforyears,onlyIdidn'tevenknowituntilIwasnolongerinthatstate.Icouldn'tmakedecisionseasily;Iwouldgetconfusedeasily,notbeing
abletofocusmymindononethingforverylong.Mynailswouldcrackandtearveryeasilyandmyhairwasdry.Myskinitchedmanytimes,asthoughsomething
werecrawlingbeneathit.Myrelationshipswereneververysecurefeeling;whenthingsgotbad,Iwouldbailout.Well,Ineededtobail,becauseIwouldmakebad
choices.Ialsohadtimesofsuicidaltendencies.
Andtherewerethecravingsforsugar,especiallychocolate.DidIlovechocolate—yetthestateI'mintoday,Icouldn'tcarelessaboutthestuff.WiththeCandida,
sugarsfeedit,soyoucravewhatitisthatyourbodywants.Notthatmybodyitselfwantedthechocolate;theyeastinmysystemwantedit.
Youwillalsocravewhatyouareallergicto,andeatingwhatyouareallergictowillmakeyougainweight.
Thereissomuchaboutourhealth,aboutourdiets,thatwearenevertaught.Iamhopingthatthroughthisbookyouwilllearnaboutyourbodyandhowtotakecare
ofit.Yourbodyisatemple;honorit.Peopletakebettercareoftheirautomobilesthantheydotheirowninstrument,themselves.
AllthesymptomsIwasreferringtoearlieraresymptomsofhypothyroidism,Candidaalbicans,parasites,allergies,andhypoglycemia,whichislowbloodsugar.
Maybeyouhavenoenergy,youtireeasily,youarehungryallthetime,andyoucannotloseweight.Youcouldstarveyourselfandtheweightwouldstillbethere,
hangingonfordearlife,orsoitseems.
Youmayhavesomeofthesesymptoms,morethanlikelyyouhaveoneortwo,maybemoreoftheseconditions

thatIamspeakingabout.Wearegoingtogetyoustraightandkeepyouthere.Thisbookisn'tjustaboutlosingweight;it'saboutbeinghealthyandtakinggreatcareof
yourself.
Ihadgonethroughthehomeopathicremedies,asIsaid,andlostfiftypoundsinjustafewshortmonths.Itwasabsolutelythebest.ItwasasifIhadfoundmyself,asif
Ihadmyselfback.NotonlydidIlookterrific,Iwasnolongerdepressedorconfused;Icouldmakedecisionswithoutgettingupset.
Theweightstayedoffmeforfouryears,anditwaseasy.KillingofftheyeastwastoughbecauseofthedietthatIhadtosticktoinaverystrictmanner,butitwaswell
worthit.
Lastyearwasabittough.Ihadbecomeveryill;thedoctorssaidthatIhadbronchitis.Afterthreemonthsofthisillness,withaseriouscoughandonlygettingworse,I
finallyconsultedmyhomeopath,Dr.Papon.IfeltasthoughIweredying,andIhadplumpedupandcouldn'tlosetheweight.
AccordingtoDr.Papon,Ihadmercurypoisoning.I'malsoaphotographer,andgotthepoisoningfromthechemicalsthatIwasusing.Themercurypoisoninghad
thrownmysystemoffandagainIhadCandida.Dr.Paponsentsomeremediesofftome,givingmegoldasanantidoteand,ofcourse,somethingfortheyeast.
Withinaweek,Iwasfeelinggoodagain.TheweightmeltedoffeasilyandstayedoffuntilItookatriptoEurope.ThefoodtherewasoutofthisworldandIateand
ate.Igainedweight,butitwasn'tbecauseIwaseatingtoomuch;Ihadpickedupaparasite.
IwasinEuropefortwomonths,alongtime,goingfromcountrytocountry.Itriedtobeverycareful,butIcouldn'tstayawayfromthewater,orImayhavepicked

theparasitesfromthefood.WhenIgothome,IknewthatIhadpickeduptheselittlepests;mybellywasbloatedandIsimplyhadallthesymptoms.
ThistimeIdecidedtotakecareofthisonmyown.Istartedeatinggarlic,andasabackup,Itooksomeblackwalnutextract.Anentirecloveofgarlic—
pure,straight,
chunkachunkagarlic—becameapartofmydailyroutine.Ipeeleditoff,cuttheendsoff,peeleditdown,andpoppeditintomymouthwithaglassofwaterathand
towashitdown.Notapleasanttaste,butIknowthatitisincrediblygoodformeformanythingsandwillkillthecrittersthatIdonotwanttocarryaroundwithme.
ThegarlicIsimplytakeeverydayandwillcontinuetotakeforagreatlongtime.
And,doIsmelllikegarlic?No!Ineverdo.Sooftenwhensomeoneeatsgarlic,itseemstoexudefromhisorherpores.Itdoesnothappentome;Idon'twantto
smelllikegarlic,so—itismyintentiontonothavethatsmellaboutme.
OneofthethingsthatIteachistocreateyourownreality;thepowerofthemindisfascinating.ItelltheuniversewhatitisthatIamchoosingandtheuniverse
provides.Weareallincrediblemanifesters,andIpracticewhatIpreach.Youcanlearnallaboutcreatingyourownrealitythroughmytapes,ThePracticalArtof
Magick.
Stressisanotherfactoringainingweight.Througheatinginamorehealthyway,gettingallthenutrientsthatweneedandagoodexerciseprogram,wecanstay
healthy,stressfree,andevenyoungforaverylongtime.Itismyintentiontostayyoung.Andwhatthatmeanstomeisfeelingyouthful,beingabletodoallthe
physicalthingsthatIwantandneedtodo.Iwanttomovewithoutpain;asalittlevanitystepsin,IwanttokeepthefigurethatIhavefora

verylongtime.IenjoythefactthatpeopleoftenthinkthatI'maboutfifteenyearsyoungerthanIreallyam.NotthatIgivethemthatimpressionbylyingaboutmyage.
I'mquiteproudthatI'mforty
seven,anddon'tlookoldenoughtobeagrandmother(althoughmygrandsonreferstomeas''Honey"ratherthan"Grandma").Hecame
upwiththenameonhisownwithnocoaxing.ThereIgobeingatypicalgrandmother,talkingaboutmygrandson,asifhehassomethingtodowithweightloss.
However,chasinghimarounddoesn'thurt.
BesidesthegarlicthatIeat,whichIbelieveismuchmorepotentthatgarlicpills,therearemanyotherthingsthatIdotostayinshape,whichI'mnotgoingtogointo
rightnow.You'lllearnaboutthesethingsaswegofurtherintothebook.
ThereisoneotherthingthatIdowanttodiscusswithyouhere.Idodrinkagreatdealofwater.Idrinkbottledspringwater.Igothroughaboutagalloneverytwo
days.Idrinkitwithlemon;weneedagreatdealofcitrusinoursystem.Mostpeopledon'tgetnearenoughcitrusintheirdiets.Ialsodrinkseltzerwaterwithlemon
wedges.
Waterisgoodforyouformanyreasons,oneofmyfavoritereasonsiswhatwaterhasdoneforme,inthevisualsense.Istartedgettingwrinklesataveryyoungage
andmyhandshaveneverbeenpretty.Myhands,inthepast,havelookedlikeanoldwoman'shands.Thatwasalwaysdisturbingtome.Iwouldstraightenmyhand
out,stretchmyfingersoutandtheskinonthetopofmyhandswouldwrinkleup,scrunchup,andlooklikecrinklypaper.Ugly!Afemalefriendofmine,Kathy
Oddenino,whoisinmybookMindTravelers,writesbeautifulbooksonhealingyourselfthroughpropernutrition.Oneofthethingsthatshetaughtmewastodrink
lotsofwater,anditwouldaid

skinnedhands.Well,itworkedandisstillworking,becauseIwillcontinuetodrinkasmuchwaterasIcan.Eventhetextureofmyskin
hasimproved,andismuchsofterthanithaseverbeen.
Thewayourskinlooksisabigfactorinshowingourage.Irealizethatthisbookisaboutriddingyourselfofunwantedpounds;however,Ialsowanttoteachyouhow
tobehealthierandfeelgood.Ifyoulookgood,youareprobablygoingtoalsobefeelingprettygood.Itallworkstogether.
Ihaven'ttoldyouthatthisisnecessarilygoingtobeallthateasy.Forsomeofyou,itmight;someofyoumayhavetoworkalittlebitharder.I'massumingthatyou
boughtthisbookbecauseyouwanttodosomethingaboutyourweightandyourhealth;youknowthetwogohandinhand.Alongwithgettingyourselfwhereitisthat
youwanttobe,wealsoneedtoworkonyourbody;getyourbodyintomotion.Getupandmove!Youcanspeeduptheweightlossupbygettingphysical.This
doesn'tmeanthatyouhavetogoandjoinagym.Youcanbegentleonyourbody,andyetveryeffective.Oftenitishardtoexercisealone;maybeyouneedsupport
tokeepyoumotivated.
AfewyearsagoIdecidedthatIwouldgetoutandwalkeverymorningorevening;Iwoulddoitforawhilethenstop.IwantedittobeanaturalthingandIwanted
toincorporatethisintomylifewhereitwouldbeahabit;Iwouldhavenoresistancetoit.Well,IwouldwalkandthenIwouldn'twalk.Keepinmindthatgoingout
andtakingastrollisnotgoingtodoyoumuchgood.Youwanttowalkwithpassion,walkfast,no—speeditup,walkevenfaster.WhatIdecidedtodowastoget
oneofmydaughterstogooutanddothiswithme.SometimesIwouldgetluckyandIwouldhavethecompanyoftwoofmydaughtersgoing

withme.Theycouldneverkeepupwithme;Imeantbusiness;Iwantedtowalkandgetmybloodflowing,moving,workupagoodhealthysweat.Ionlywalkfor
twentyminutes.That'snotverylong,butitworks.
IfailedtomentionhowIwalk,orratherwhere.IfoundthatifIweretoplantogetupandjustheadoutthedoortowalk,Iwaslessapttodoit.So,Ibegantogetup
earlyinthemorning,getready,anddrivedowntothebeach,parkmycar,andwalkontheboardwalk.Itwasonlyfifteenminutesfrommyhouseandabeautifulplace
tobe.That'ssomethingthatyoumaywanttoconsidertryingifthereisaparknearwhereyouareliving,orawalkingtrail,ormaybeyou,too,livenearthebeachor
someplaceequallyasbeautiful.Don'tforgettodosomestretchingbeforeyougooutthereandstartpoundingyourhoofiesontheground.
