1. Đề số 1
Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question. (2d)
Computer programmer David Jones earns £ 35, 000 a year designing new computer games,
yet he can't find a bank prepared to let him have a cheque card. Instead, he has been told to wait
another two years, until he is 18.

The 16-year-old boy works for a firm in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of
his age is finding a job. David's firm releases two new games for the expanding home computer
market each month.

Vietnam is a densely-populated, developing country that in the last 30 years has had to
recover from the ravages of war. Substantial progress was achieved from1986 to 1997 in moving

liberalization and international integration. They have moved to implement the structural reforms
needed to modernize the economy and to produce more competitive, export-driven industries. .

Vietnam's membership in the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and entry into force of the US-

When you first apply for a job, you might not succeed in getting it. It's always a good idea
to ask them to explain to you what prevented you from beating the other candidates. Don’t
complain about the situation, but ask them to advise you on what you can do better next time.
Perhaps the interviewer disproved of or disagreed with something you said. Perhaps they just
glance at your application and saw something that made it easy to choose between you and
another candidate. Don’t regard it as a failure, but recognize it as chance to learn more. As long
as you don’t worry too much about it and continue to believe in yourself, you’ll eventually find the

chance you've been waiting for. Then your family and friends will be able to congratulate you on

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions .
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause
a disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest
mistakes which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his
parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to
children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but
are ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well — especially if the

parents are very supportive of their child.

Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by
taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive
him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music,
but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter
music competitions if he is unwilling.
Winston Smith, Michael's friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful
musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful
as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when
he doesn’t win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always
seems quiet and unhappy.
33.The two examples given in the passage illustrate the principle that
A. successful parents always have intelligent children
B. successful parents often have unsuccessful children
C. parents should spend more money on the child’s education
D. parents should let the child develop in the way he wants

34.Parents’ ambition for their children is not wrong if they
A. force their children into achieving success
B. understand and help their children sensibly
C. themselves have been very successful
D. arrange private lessons for their children
35.Who have criticized the methods of some ambitious parents?
A. Successful musicians

B. Unrealistic parents

C. Educational psychologists

D. Their children

A. “getting ready to do something”
B. “eager to do something”
C. “not objecting to doing anything”
D. “not wanting to do something”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
British society is considered to be divided into three main groups of classes — the upper class,
the middle class, and the lower or working class. This is Known as the class system and it is
important to know something about it, if you mean to understand British people and society. Most
British people grow up with a deep knowledge and understanding of the class system even if
they are not very conscious of it. As a result, more people know which class they belong to and
are able to tell which class other people come from by the way they speak, the kind of clothes
they wear, their interests and hobbies or even the type of food they eat.

Social class is not only about behavior and attitudes. For example, although many upper-class
people are rich and may own a lot of land, having a lot of money does not necessarily make a
person one member of the upper class. It is also important to come from a particular kind of
family, have friends who are considered suitable, have been a certain type of private school and
speak with the right kind of accent. There are people who are poor but they do not think of
themselves as working class because their family background, education, political opinions, etc
are basically different from those of most working- class people. Many people do not like the
class system but it is impossible to pretend that these differences do not exist or that British
people do not sometimes form opinions in this way.
Question 31: According to the passage, you can’t judge an Englishman's social class by
A. where he was born

B. the way he speaks

C. the clothes he wears

The idea of the class system in Britain

A. exists only in the mind of foreigners

B. is deeply rooted in the British people

C. is now under severe attack

Question 33: If an Englishman has much money,

A. he belongs to the middle class

B. he must be a member of the upper class

C. he is not likely to be from the upper class

D. he may buy an upper class title with the

money

Question 34: What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?
A. Many rich people do not belong to the upper class.
B. Today many British people do not like the class system.
C. Many poor people do not consider themselves.
D. An Englishman’s social class is determined by many factors.
Question 35: What would be the best title for the passage?
