GRAMMAR
Comparative forms of adjectives 
(Review)


1. Short and Long Adjectives:

­ ­ Short adjectives: (tính từ ngắn) là tính từ 1 vần 
  Ex: big, small, tall, thick, hot, warm…
 ­ Long adjectives: (tính từ dài) là tính từ có từ 2 
vần   
Ex: useful, expensive, modern, beautiful, …
 trở
 lên

Ngoại trừ:  Những tính từ sau đây cũng được xem 
như tính từ ngắn.
   + Tính từ có 2 vần, tận cùng là “y”:
Ex: funny, easy, pretty, happy, lazy, crazy…
+ Tính từ 2 vần, tận cùng là: “et”,“er”, “ow”, 


“le”


2. Comparatives:
a) Short Adjectives
 Dùng dạng so sánh hơn của tính từ để so 
sánh 2 người / vật/ địa điểm.

­ John is taller than Tom (is). 
­ Mr. Brown is bigger than Mr. Peter.
S1 + be + tính từ ngắn + “­er” + than + 
S2.


* Cách thêm “­ER”

 Qui tắc chung: Thêm “­er” sau tất cả các tính từ ngắn.
 Đặc biêt:
­ Tính từ  1 vần, tận cùng là  1 phụ âm, trước phụ âm 
là 1
ngun âm (qui t
ắc 1­1­1),   gấp đơi phụ âm cuối, rồi 

Ex: big  bigger          fat   fatter
thêm “­er” .
­ Tính từ 1 vần, tận cùng là “e”, chỉ thêm “­r”. 
Ex: safe  safer             nice  nicer
­ Tính từ 2 vần, tận cùng là “y”, đổi “y”  “i”, rồi thêm 
“­er”.
Ex: happy    happier            lucky    luckier
­ Tính từ 2 vần, tận cùng là: “et / er / ow / le” thêm “­
er”Ex: new  newer            clever      cleverer


* Irregular Comparatives (Dạng SS hơn BQT)

* Comparative forms of adverbs (Dạng SS hơn 
của trạng từ. 

 Dạng SS hơn của trạng từ cũng giống như dạng 
SS hơn của tính từ.

 ­ Hầu như tất cả các trạng từ chỉ thể cách đều là 
trạng từ dài, bởi vì chúng được tạo thành bằng: 
Adj_ly.  

FORM:

S1 + V + MORE + Trạng từ dài + THAN  + 
S2. 
Ex: Mr. Pike walks more slowly than Mrs. Mary 
(does).
Nga works more quietly than Nam (does).


- Only these following adverbs (the same form as
adjectives) are short: soon, late, early, fast,
hard…

Note: Some irregular forms of adverbs of manner
